Pretentious, soulless and impersonal are the words I would use to describe this huge international hotel. Nothing at all Chinese about our Executive room on the 20th floor; it could have been anywhere in the World. The hotel's one redeeming feature, as far as I am concerned, was its 21st floor River View Restaurant, which was really nice.

So where do I start with the reasons why we did not enjoy our stay at the Minshan? Well the caption summarises it, but for specifics:

For a supposedly international standard hotel, I would have expected that the staff could perhaps have spoken better English.

I would have expected the bank ATM in the lobby area to be one that accepted International cards. It didn't accept mine and I had to walk ten minutes up the road to the Bank of China to draw some cash.

The small flies helping themselves to some of the breakfast buffet dishes on the first morning were quite off putting.

Our executive room on the 20th floor was, on the face of it, very stylish. But it was, in our opinion, a triumph of style over practicality.
There was little full hanging space in the wardrobe and nowhere near enough sensible storage space for shoes.
In the his and hers sinks bathroom there was virtually nowhere to hang the many towels.
The levels of lighting were not good, especially at the mirrors over the sinks.
All room lighting was controlled by flush touch button consoles on either side of the bed. It meant that if you tried to turn one bedside light on in the night you were likely to turn them all on, because of not being able to tell which is which.

When we arrived, as is the custom in most hotels, they took a pre-authorisation on my credit card; obviously they chose the amount to reserve, not me. So when we had a very nice meal at the River View restaurant on the 21st floor and I asked to charge the bill to our room, I was gobsmacked to be told that our pre-authorisation was not enough to cover it, so we would have to pay there and then by credit card. For goodness sake! Any decent hotel will just let you sign and sort it out on checkout, but not the Minshan!

The bed, I have to admit, was reasonably comfortable.

All in all though, we were glad to leave the Minshan and move on to our next destination. I could not recommend anyone to stay there.

Just a one night stop over here on our way to see the Panda's. Good location about a 10 minute walk to the main square where you'll find a statue to Chairman Mao with a shopping mall underneath with lots of western coffee & fast food outlets, all open until late.

Quite an ordinary hotel, but very disappointed with our included evening meal. We had been eating Chinese food for the past 10 days but struggled to identify many dishes here and food was also very spicy. Included was a glass of water which had things floating in it. Very good desserts which are somewhat hidden back by the entrance and a chocolate fountain & ice cream fridge, walk past these and you'l find the juices for breakfast I took a glass and no one said anything. On the Saturday night we were the only Western tourists although the restaurant was very busy with local families, who the hotel obviously caters for.

One good thing was the top floor bar, after we had a walk we went back for a drink with lovely views over the city. A bit pricey and don't leave a tip as a service charge of about 17.5% is added!

Room Tip: High floor

So, we stayed at this property for just the night and had to leave very early the next morning. However, it is a fabulous hotel. Beds were soft and room is spacious. Great amenities and linens. I would certainly enjoy staying at this hotel longer.

They had a morning snack to go for us, which was very nice.

My daughter lost her passport and we had trouble getting the police to write a report. The language was a barrier and without a local businessman involved, we would never have gotten one. The Lobby Manager was from Singapore-spoke beautiful English, he not only spoke to the police on our behalf, he went to the Police station with us to insure we got what we needed to then bring to the entrance and exit service center the next day. It was comforting to find someone willing to help us. It was not that way in most parts of China. Hotel was the last stop on the airport shuttle which made us more comfortable that we knew where we were to get off. Location was perfect, room was clean and comfortable, breakfast was extensive and included in the room. WiFi actually worked-special thanks to that Manager-awesome service!

Room Tip: Not a bad room in the house!

This is so far the best hotel we have stayed in in china. Beautifully presented and well situated near the river. We ate in the Chinese restaurant on the second floor and managed to find sliced fillet steak in a spicy sauce which we ate with vermicelli noodles and vegetables . Some of the Chinese food is quite off putting , toads thighs for example! But if you look there will be something for the not so adventurous ! Second night we walked left out of the hotel over the river, turn left down the riverside to the ginkgo restaurant where we also had a good meal. The advantage there is that they translate the menu into English ,
Breakfast at the hotel is excellent with good variety of Western and Chinese cuisine.

Room Tip: It can be noisy from traffic at the front, possibly a river view would be better
