The hotel in itself is ok, however if you get one of the rooms on the side street with the little market place you will not sleep. Even with ear plugs. Ridiculous amounts of noise all through the night non-stop. We had to move after 1 night. A few other communication issues with the staff but to be fair my Spanish isn’t very good!

The good: Location and cleanliness of the room.

The bad: Customer service
We booked taxi transportation at this hotel for two different trips. Both times we were told the hotel driver would drive us - he never showed up - TWICE!
We stayed four nights - both transportation requests were booked in the morning after our first night - plenty of advance notice.
First trip was to go diving in Taganga - 15 minutes after our planned departure the driver had not showed up. The hotel got us an overpriced taxi (as we found out when we got at taxi back from Taganga to the hotel).

Second time was when we had booked van transportation for 6 to Barranquilla airport leaving at 10:30am. At 9am the morning of the departure to the airport I talked to the receptionist to confirm the driver would pick us up - I told her about the previous issues with the driver. We were told everything was ok. At 10:30 - no driver, at 10:40 - no driver. The receptionist made some phone calls with no communication to us what was going on. They said they would get us two taxis - that would be a lot more expensive! - I said I refuse to pay. We ( party of 6) were getting extremely frustrated as there was no communication from the receptionist, no apology about the situation and no resolution who would pay for the taxis. At 11:00 we HAD to leave ( to catch our international flight) and were told the hotel would pay the difference in our initial quoted price (that we found out was also an inflated price) to the taxi drivers. We left extremely frustrated and angry. We understand things happen - but the lack of an apology and acknowledgement of the mess the hotel had created, left all of furious.

Actually, the luggage helper/ bell boy ( who had nothing to do with this mess) was the only person apologizing.....

Moreover, the breakfast service at this hotel is extremely slow.

All-in-all this hotel had the worst customer service we received at all of our accommodations traveling in Colombia over 3 weeks time - adding to it: this was also the most expensive place we stayed at....

We were staying nearby but had to move, and we found this place. Excellent find!

The rooftop and the pool area is just stunning, there are open sun or shaded areas to enjoy. The hotel plays some music, there is a bar, there are toilets and shower facilities. The pool has a shallow section that you can actually lay out in if you want to cool down, but not properly submerge and swim.

The room had floor to ceiling windows with a great view, we had three beds in our room for the three of us, and it was just sleek, modern and comfortable with the aircon.

Breakfast was nothing to write home about, but it did the job. The staff seemed new and inexperienced, so those teething problems have hopefully been worked through. For the growing western/English speaking tourists we encountered, I would suggest they have a look at the options to see if there is anything to cater to them.

The rooftop bar cocktails seemed a little watery and weak, as we liked to enjoy a sundowner on the rooftop. Tourists can tell when cocktails are watered down, so I'd suggest the bar manager uses a measurement system to satisfy the customers.

The reception staff were lovely and didn't mind helping us night and day. Firstly they were very helpful in arranging our stay, as we had to leave our hostel as our room had no power. Also, they booked us onto a mini-bus to Barranquilla for a really good price, far cheaper than a taxi and it was very comfortable and clean. We were going to the carnival, so that fact they could organise this at short notice was excellent.

There were clearly areas that needed sorting out, maintenance projects, but we forgave those as we understood the hotel had just reopened and was tidying up, plus the plus points outweighed those niggles.

Seriously, I dream of that rooftop pool to this day.

The rooms at the Hotel Cathedral Plaza are clean and comfortable enough, but the place really has no soul. There are some lovely hotels in Santa Marta with character, but this one is not one of them. I had to keep the blind drawn on my window as it looked out onto a corridor ( why there was a window at all in that situation is beyond me). The staff were friendly enough, but the breakfast was extremely limited and they made me wear a ridiculous wrist band, which I presume was for security purposes. Not a bad hotel at all, but there are better choices in Santa Marta for a similar price.

Breakfast is really poor, both in quality and variation, with over cooked hot food and cheap cereal but staff are very helpful and the rooms clean and comfortable.
There’s only one small elevator for the hotel and the rooftop pool is small but for location it was close to the old town and restaurants and bars
