My husband and I have been visiting Goa each February for the last 10 years. The weather is perfect and it's very cheap to eat here. The only drawback is the cost of the Taxis which used to be very cheap but prices have risen steeply over the last few years.
After a few years of staying at 4 and 5 star resorts, we decided to invest in the Beach Club at the Mobor Beach - waiting for the villas to be built, with the intention of buying a villa. The villas have not been completed for different reasons and so we have extended our membership of the beach club.
We have stayed there for the last 7 years and have always enjoyed our stay there. It's not the Ritz, but it's always clean and tidy. If you are paying £35-£45 per night then you cannot expect the Ritz, but it is an ideal place to return to after a long day at the beach. The pool - which is filled with spring water which is why it's cloudy - gets very hot whereas the beach has a lovely breeze.
There are a lot of older folks who go out there for the British Winter - and I don't blame them.

We stayed here last year with Thomas Cook, and i have to say never again. We arrived at 7am after a long flight only to be told that our room would not be available for an hour...we waited 3 hours in the end. The room itself was basic but ok, with 2 double beds but no A/c, which we were told would be an extra £250 a week...we made do without and decided to put the money saved back into the local economy rather than the pocket of the greedy owner of the Hotel. Best thing about this hotel is the Chef Vinney, who is a star and cooks a great steak!

We ate regularly at Dom's shack on the beach, The River view in the evening and The Rice Bowl for a late night drink and chinsese.

You get what you pay for and if all you want is a base then this hotel is bareable...otherwise stay clear! There are more friendly owners in the area who would welcome your custom...

Firstly I have to say that we paid very little for a package over Xmas, and we didn't expect much - we weren't disappointed!
We were given room 109 - avoid if at all possible, it's hot as the sun is blasting on it all day and it faces a building site (luckily currently not being worked on). There is a fan but all it does is move the hot air. Air conditioning available - we were offered the 'upgrade' for an extra £25 PER DAY - far too much so we refused and waited until we could be moved to another room as soon as another became available (4 days). This was on the other side of the hotel, overlooking the countryside and very much better as we could use the balcony and have the doors open - as it was shaded from the sun it was cooler too. Lots of mosquitoes everywhere.
Continental breakfast was included - in consisted of tea or coffee, fruit juice and toast (2 rounds) with butter and a preserve. Anything extra (eggs to order, porridge etc) had to be paid for but wasn't expensive. The staff were efficient and friendly enough, but the restaurant manager always looked worried that you might leave without paying!! The one time we had a salad for lunch it was excellent - but so few people ate there that even when we were offered a free meal on Xmas Eve because they'd cancelled the free Gala Dinner we didn't accept because there was no-one else there!
The majority of the people staying seemed to be long stay retirees - friendly enough, but it was a bit like visiting elderly relatives much of the time. The outside area around the pool isn't attractive either and was too cloudy for my liking, so doesn't encourage you to stay rather than trekking down to the beach. This can be reached either by a 10 minute walk along the track from the hotel - or by a 5 rupee bus ride to the other access point farther down the beach which is clean, loads of shacks with free sunbeds and good food. The only downside was all the beach sellers desperate for your custom. A firm no thank you works well, but show interest in anything and expect a queue of willing sellers. Tourism is down, and there are lots of people desperate for your rupees. Prices have risen sharply over the last couple of years, and although Mobor is cheap by UK standards, by Indian standards prices are high and expect to pay more here than you would in other, less touristy areas.
To sum up, we paid very little for a last minute package and can't complain as we had good value for money and enjoyed our holiday - but the quality of the accommodation is poor and if I was travelling independently or returning I wouldn't consider staying at the Mobor Beach Resort, you can get better for less elswhere in the resort.

We arrived in Goa on a real high after just coming from Mumbai and looking forward to the second installment of our 3 leg trip.
Enjoyed a scenic ride in a little Bedford Rascal type vehicle with a superb taxi driver by the name of Fabio (although the vehicle did smell very strongly of petrol fumes which made us feel rather nausious).
After arriving at the apartments the front of the building looked impressive and welcoming - our joys of happiness were to be very short lived.
Entering the cold, uninviting reception we were asked to pay upfront for the duration of our stay in cash (not in Indian currency, but in British Pounds instead???).
We were unable to give GBP (luckily!) and instead agreed to pay on credit card.
We were then shown to our room. The accomodation was basic, drab, looked old and smelt like an old pair of trainers. The beds were the hardest that I've ever slept on and the shower ran only cold water whilst trying to keep the water flowing due to the broken shower knob.
We decided to take a wander around the rest of the luxury hotel to check out its prestige facilities. OMG! Only then did we truly realise that this hotel would not have been out of place on a hotels from hell holiday programme.
Firstly, the hotel was actually closed for maintenance. The pool was closed. Tables and chairs were stacked in a corner. The poolside and corridor were littered with tins of paint and rags. All the shops in the hotel lobby area were empty as if they had gone out of business. There were no restaurant facilities or bar, infact, nowhere on site could you purchase food or drink. It makes me laugh when you look at the hotel's email address - Paradise in Goa, it should be more like Paradise Lost in Goa.
They must of known that the hotel was closed for business when we arrived and this would explain the reason why they requested us to pay in English money (Cash only upfront).
We decided to curtail our paradise in Goa experience, after enduring just 1 night - the paradise was far too much for us to handle, NOT! Instead we got the best taxi driver in South Goa (our mate Fabio) to take us somewhere with a hotel that has life and other guests. He took us to a very pleasurable hotel called The Falcon, Calangute.
As a last note, make sure you place a rolled up towel at your door to stop the geko's from gaining free access to your luxury room.
To sum this all up, we felt we were lied to, misled, cheated, the hotel was a total disgrace and as we had had the forsight to refuse their request to pay by cash we instead paid by credit card and successfully claimed our money back from them......
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

The Mobor beach hotel is situated in Cavelossim Goa which is an ideal place for a relaxing holiday. The rooms are basic but have everything we needed - our shower was not working very well when we arrived but a trip to reception the following morning and it was sorted out straight away. The staff are very polite and efficient, nothing is too much trouble especially during the last couple of days when they are trying to earn a good tip!
We had a phone call from Thomas Cook the day before we flew to say there was builing work to the rear of the hotel but, as visa's and everything else had been organised we were not going to cancel. It turned out the building work was about two yards away from our balcony and it had not been erected during the last couple of months. This didn't bother us as we didn't spend much time in our room but I'm sure Thomas Cook must have known about this much sooner than they let us know. We will be writing to them to express our opinions soon.
The Port 'O' Call English bar at the hotel is run by a lovely couple called Sue and Tim. The bar is fully air conditioned, has a free pool table, dart board, and shows a lot of football. Sue provides some 'English' bar snacks if you tire of the Goan food, we didn't partake as we love curry etc, but everyone who ate there while we were in said Sues food was delicious.
It is 5 years since we were last in Cavelossim and the place hasn't changed much - it is still a great place to unwind with some lovely restaurants - our favorite being 'River View' where you can site on the banks of the river Sal and enjoy the peace and tranquility.
We took the free ferry over the river one day and spend out time leisurely walking and stopping for the occasional drink. We were facinated by the local fish market, lots of hustle and bustle and a lot of strange looking fish.
We will definately visit Cavelossim again in the not too distant future.
