The moment you drive into village, it is a different experience. A narrow lane that allows only one vehicle to pass through, a small village circle which perhaps is the centre of the village, and which is the centre of all the activity, a lane that guides you to the old and beautiful Alchi Choskor monastery lined on both sides with turquoise souvenir selling shops, apple trees all over smelling of sweet apples - can't explain in words the beauty of the village.

The monastery itself is very old, presumably 1000 years or so, but still standing tall and beautiful. The murals/paintings on the walls may have worn out but the life in them hasn't. May be they could have some guides there to explain the stories behind those murals. There is a whole lot of heritage in that place. There were many small temples one for each deity. The doors were small so that you bow as you enter, so thoughtful thus reminding us that the almighty is supreme. Most of them were wooden structures and were getting renovated. There are many prayer wheels lined one after the other along an alley. Amidst countless trees with the Indus in the backdrop, this monastery is just out of the world. You also have a couple of Indus viewing points where you can click some amazing pictures.

This is a must visit for every ladakh traveller. Don't miss it for anything.

I cannot see much in Leh Ladakh because you have to climb all these places but this is the one I did take the initiative to go to... my driver was really nice he pushed my chair through all those impossible kind of areas to make me see this monastery.... even though I did not go much towards inside to see the other part of the monastery I got a chance to see the main statues and it was really very beautiful to know about the history of the place and also the person at the monastery was really nice and went out of his way to help me ...when you go towards the monastery there are a lot of souvenir shops and I did buy some nice idol of Shivji and family made of brass that is one of my memories of the place

The temples were locked well after the sign stated they should be open. Stupas all crumbling outside. Relatively expensive entrance fee, obviously no used for restoring the once stunning wall paintings. All together found it drab, touristy and disappointing. Not worth the detour.
