Le Colonial - Probably India's oldest Heritage Hotel.....

Review of Le Colonial
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 Aug 2016
Le Colonial is, I think, Asia’s oldest hotel in Fort Cochin – dates to 1506. Its adjacent to St. Francis Church and its said that Vasco da Gama and the Saint Ranscis had too stayed in that building.

Its now managed by the famous Neemrana brand of India.

I had the pleasure to stay there on one of my business trips.

My stay there has been memorable. There are two grand rooms and 5 other rooms. I had taken a "Other" room and that room too was very comfortable. Stocked with best amenties and it had all period furniture. Food is awesome at Le Colonia. It is well loacted - just opposite to the Chinese Fishing Nets. Most sites to visit in Fort Cochin were in walking distance. Staff was very helpful and very pleasant.

A wonderful, friendly hotel which is more like visiting a home. Truely lovely staff who did everything to make our stay a joy. There is a lit of great history (a speciality of the place) in the hotel itself which us really worth investigating. The chef is great too and I recommend eating here. Overall a great place to explore Kochi and surroundings from.

We had an amazing 3 nights here during May. Le Colonial has so many things to recommend it. From the moment you walk through the doors into the walled courtyard you feel relaxed. You move from the colourful modern day Indian street scenes and into a sense of Portugeuse, Dutch and British influence in this part of the World. The rooms are large and the house is tastefully furnished in a Colonial manner, with plenty of room to find a quiet spot to read a book.

The service in the Hotel is very good. The staff are attentive but discreet which is important in a smaller boutique hotel. The Chef is very accomplished, from lovely fresh fruit and scrambled eggs for breakfast to local dishes for lunch and supper. The hotel employs a driver who is happy to ferry you anywhere and has great local knowledge.

Staying at Le Colonial really does feel like you are part of a house party or visiting friends. A truly relaxing experience.

We visited Cochin at the end of the tourist season and only two rooms were occupied in the beautiful and historic Le Colonial built in 1506. We were upgraded to a spacious room with two double beds and a luxurious washroom (bathroom). Ceiling fans and air conditioning kept our room comfortable in the hot and humid climate of Southern India. And our veranda was bigger than our living room back home! Breakfast and dinner were delicious! The hotel has internet, but it wasn't working too well, so we had to go down to the lobby to get a good signal. Our stay at Le Colonial was thoroughly enjoyable! We were close to the sights of Fort Cochin and watched men using Chinese fishing nets to catch fish, then on to Mattancherry Palace, Jew town with shops and synagogue, and Dhobi Khana an outdoor laundry where clothes are hand washed with a method dating back to 1720 when Indians washed uniforms for the Dutch military. I found it fascinating to watch the men pound the wet clothes on rock, wring them out, after which they were hung out on lines to dry (no clothes pins.) The shirts were ironed with an iron containing life coals. Fascinating! A good place to visit with children--it doesn't take long.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights from 1 April 2016 - a beautiful old colonial building with only 7 bedrooms - all very good. We booked the best, and most expensive of the lot - the Viceroy. It looked great - big and comfortable. The weather was hot and very humid. We quickly discovered that the air conditioning was not working in the room. Attempts to repair this failed. It was unbearable. We ended up being shuffled from one room to another - ending up sleeping in three different, not as good, rooms in only 4 nights - the air con in the second of the three rooms also conked out. To make matters worse we discovered that this problem was not new and had occurred only weeks before. In my view they should never have accepted a booking in this expensive place in these circumstances. The episode was most unsatisfactory - and the owner would not even consider a refund of the money we had wasted.
I should add that the staff on duty led by Sumesh were great and did all they could to make us comfortable but this was a problem outside their control.

We booked last minute on Easter weekend. We arrived to find only us and one other guest at the hotel...which made it really nice and quiet, exactly what was needed. The staff is very accommodating and kind. This is a small heritage hotel 8 rooms, with a simple kitchen available to serve traditional Indian and beer and wine for lunch and dinner and simple continental breakfast. The rooms are very clean, well appointed and air conditioned. The A/C was very much appreciated as temps were in the high 90's with high humidity during our stay. There is a small lovely porch to have morning tea and coffee. Some rooms have their own balcony. The pool is small but very nice for an afternoon dip. We visited many sites and shops nearby easily walking. We had a drink at another large heritage hotel in the area and were incredibly glad not to have booked there - Le Colonial was much preferred.

Room tip: Rooms with balcony facing the pool are likely the most quiet.
