Warning: do not eat food at this hotel. We found a cockroach in the breakfast buffet. The hotel had very little response, and in fact tried to still charge us for the breakfast - Seems like a common occurrence, and a good way to get Typhoid (remember your innoculations are only 70% effective) or any other food-borne disease.

Otherwise the hotel was pretty lousy - meant to be 4 stars but it seemed more like 2. The beds were damp, the bathrooms had not been renovated for decades. We ordered a yoga teacher for the next day, and when we came down the next morning we discovered that they forgot to contact her at all. Such a waste of time.

Conclusion: way overpriced, unhygienic, uncomfortable rooms, avoid staying here.

The hotel was centre of our Silver Jubilee reunion activity in December 2011. The arrangements and care taken by hotel made us relive the experience and enjoy the occasion with friends and family. We were approx 200 people. The package from them included Dance, Music and Gazhal program. The experience at the Palace Hotel at Ghat was the great topping to the ice-cream.
The service and attention was to the details and in my view every thing at Hotel went as planned. Special thanks to the team led by Mr Satyajit Gopal. It was a Value for Moey experience.

The hotel is in a good location, away from the crowded and rather squalid ghats area, with nice gardens. The alfresco poolside dinner was a bonus. But the lobby and lounges are anything but restful, with very large tour groups constantly booking in and out; a breakdown in their card system when we were checking out brought chaos. Also the air conditioning refused to take the temperature any lower than 75F at night, even though it was probably cooller than that outside.

Full of tour groups getting up early for sunrise over the Ganges. This can be quite noisy so don't expect a lie in, but if this is what your wish to do, then the hotel is geared up for it. Service was quite slow, allow an hour for breakfast if you need more than one cup of tea/coffee to start the day. Don't go for the bbq at the poolside. A few people in our group were ill following this.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Exuding colonial charm but with all the mod-cons. this hotel is the flagship of the Clarks Group of Hotels, one of the oldest hotel groups in India. Within proximity of the hotel guests can visit the Old British Cantonment Area, the old city, Vishwanath Temple, and of course the Ghats of the Ganges, and Sarnath-the site of Buddha's first sermon. A must do when in this holy city is a boat ride in the Ganges either at sunset or sunrise. The restaurants on-site offer ample choices from North Indian to international dishes and even popular street food dishes. After a long day exploring Varanasi on foot and in rickshaws, a quick dip at the hotel pool is sure to be refreshing. An excellent hotel, Clarks is a popular choice for guests visiting this North Indian city. ... more   less
