“Peaceful retreat in a Balinese neighborhood”

We just had a return visit to the Garden Cottage at Villa Manis. We chose to spend two weeks here as we knew we could shut off from the hurley burley of life, enjoy the stillness and peace of the rice fields and still get to everywhere we wanted to go in Bali. Walking down Jalan Sri Wedari to Ubud Raya takes about 10 mins at a slow Balinese stroll through the neighborhood of Taman. It is a 45 minute drive to Seminyak and you also have access to the central areas of Bali if you want to experience the spiritual heart of this gorgeous island. Each day we walked to different restaurants, swam in the private pool, enjoyed the breeze from our balcony, and slept to the sounds of geckos and frogs. It is also easy access to my preferred yoga studio at Intuitive Flow in Penestanan. Mary Lee and her team Wayan and Made look after you so well it feels like home away from home. We will return.

“Lovely”
Reviewed 1 November 2012 for a stay in October 2012

We have just spent a very happy week at Villa Manis. Fabulous location 10 minutes from the hustle and bustle of Ubud, yet this beautifullly designed and appointed little haven is so quiet and peaceful with a salt water pool right outside the front door. Very stylish and comfortable. We enjoyed Villa Manis very much. Congratulations to Mary and her staff on creating and maintaining this charming home away from home

“Charming Villa in Beautiful Setting”

What a find! Only spent 3 nights in Villa Manis - just not long enough! Manis means 'sweet' in Indonesian and this place certainly lives up to its' name. The owner Mary, has created a beautiful haven away from the hustle and bustle of the main centre of Ubud.

The villa is located in a quiet area of Ubud. The street leading up to Villa is is well maintained, lined with frangipanni trees and mostly traditional Balinese compounds. It's a contrast to other areas closer to the market and palace where the traffic can be chaotic and noises from construction annoying. It would be about a 10 minute walk to the main road, but we hired a motorbike so this made getting around a lot easier.

On arriving at the winding path that takes you past rice paddies you enter a lush garden filled with tropical colour and there sits this sweet white villa with creamy sage french shutters.

The villa is tastefully furnished with antique pieces and has a homely feel. The rooms are spacious and one can sit in a comfy lounge chair, open the french doors or the large sliders and the pool is right in front of you with tropical flowers behind. The view from the kitchen windows is over rice fields teeming with ducks. It is very private and quiet. There are ceiling fans for cooling and a great breeze from the open windows. The bedroom has AC, TV and DVD player with a selection of movies to choose from.

There is another villa just down the path but at a distance that is private. The pool is shared by the other guests and the owner whose house is also nearby. This didn't pose a problem but I imagine it could be difficult if there were a few guests or children staying in the larger villa.

The kitchen has a full size stove if one feels inclined to cook, but with so many wonderful eateries in Ubud, I wouldn't even think about it! Breakfast can be prepared for you by the very friendly staff who come in each day to clean. They will also shop for you if necessary.

As Mary was to be away when we arrived, she organised for a friend, Lisa, to welcome us which was very kind. Mary and Lisa are very warm, friendly and helpful ladies.

Villa Manis is just perfect...a place I could call 'home away from home'. I do hope to return in the not too distant future.

“Exceeded expectations”
Reviewed 4 June 2012 for a stay in May 2012

When I booked Villa Manis back in Nov 2011 for my May 2012 stay I had a fair idea of what to expect from reading other reviews and with my contact with the owner who had sent me additional photos of the property. Mary was always easily accessible and would respond to my endless emails promptly, accurately and with a high level of care and understanding. On arrival I was delighted to realise that my expectations had been well and truly exceeded. Whilst all the photos on the various websites accurately depicted the villa, what they couldn't do was convey the actual feel of the villa and its surroundings. Villa Manis truly is a quaint and very charming colonial style property set amongst the ricefields of outer Ubud. It's perfectly located, set back far enough from the road not to hear any traffic at all. At nightfall the only sounds are the frogs and cicadas in the gardens. Early mornings are to the distant crowing of roosters and the squabble of ducks in the adjacent ricefield. It is tastefully furnished throughout and has just about everything you'd need for a perfect stay. The outdoor bathroom added to the ambience. The garden and surrounds are lush, tropical and very relaxing and the pool is a welcome relief after a hot busy day. It's a very easy and pleasant 10 minute downhill walk to Jalan Raya Ubud with all its shops, restaurants and markets. Mary herself is right next door should you need anything and the lovely villa staff make the breakfast, clean the villa, run errands to the shop, do the laundry, and clean the pool and gardens on a daily basis. It was difficult to do anything but relax and enjoy. We were very sad to leave after our 7 night stay and will most definitely return one day to the warmth and friendship that is Villa Manis. Well done Mary.
