The Galle Fort is a living city with great shops, restaurants and hotels. The actual walls were first built by the Portuguese in the early 16th century and then the Dutch and the English added more when each of those countries took over. Galle is really beautiful with a nice beach right next to the lighthouse and the combination of Portuguese, Dutch, Sri Lankan and English architecture makes this city a jewel of Sri Lanka. If I were to recommend one place in this beautiful country, I would say Galle is the number one place to visit in Sri Lanka.
The walls are accessible and one can wonder around without any problems stopping here and there to drink coconut water or visit the various churches, Buddhists temples and other attractions within the fort. This is also a favorite place to watch the sunset (by the lighthouse).
