Owner description: The history of Galle extends thousands of years to biblical times. In more recent times it was a prize to be possessed for western traders in search of wealth and glory. Its beautifully preserved colonial Dutch fort with its quaint city with cobblestone streets within is a place time forgot. Close by are magnificent beaches, rainforests and other attractions. It is definitely a fascinating place to visit.

The Galle Fort is a living city with great shops, restaurants and hotels. The actual walls were first built by the Portuguese in the early 16th century and then the Dutch and the English added more when each of those countries took over. Galle is really beautiful with a nice beach right next to the lighthouse and the combination of Portuguese, Dutch, Sri Lankan and English architecture makes this city a jewel of Sri Lanka. If I were to recommend one place in this beautiful country, I would say Galle is the number one place to visit in Sri Lanka.

The walls are accessible and one can wonder around without any problems stopping here and there to drink coconut water or visit the various churches, Buddhists temples and other attractions within the fort. This is also a favorite place to watch the sunset (by the lighthouse).

Don't bother coming to Galle just for this.

It's mediocre at best.

Worth stopping at on the way somewhere, but please don't drive for hours just to see Galle.

Get a photo and leave on your way to somewhere else.

We planned on spending a day in Galle, spent 25 minutes (and that was too long).

Apart from the hotel, the hospital and the spread of cuisines provided by various restaurants is the reason one should visit his place. The ancient architecture, the narrow streets will definitely be a new concept to many. If you can’t walk much, you can drive through or hire a tuk tuk. Wear a hat and sunglass when you venture into this beautiful Dutch colony.
