The lighthouse is quite beautiful and there is a beach below it that is quite nice and popular with locals and visitors. There is also a park to the side of the lighthouse that eventually leads to the Dutch hospital. The area can get a bit crowded but it is friendly and safe. This is the spot to watch the sunset!

The present lighthouse, operated by the Sri Lankan Ports Authority, is a 26m high cast iron structure built on Point Utrecht Bastion (Point de Galle) at the southern end of Galle Fort and strategically located in the south west corner of Sri Lanka to guard the shipping lane approach up to Colombo Port. Painted white, it is an elegant structure overlooking Galle Harbour, a major landmark and a popular tourist attraction. Surrounded by coconut palms, it is very photogenic, although it was clad in scaffolding when we were there, presumably for a new coat of paint.
The lighthouse at Galle Fort is the oldest light station in Sri Lanka and it is still working.

I was really looking forward to getting a good photo in front of the scenic Galle Fort Lighthouse, but unfortunately it is currently hidden under a bunch of scaffolding (as of March 6th) which does detract from it quite a bit. All the same, it is a nice site to take in as you stroll along the Galle Fort walls.

Very busy throughout the day, consistent flow of tourists. We ended up heading there at 6.30am on our last day and got it almost to ourselves which was nice :)

Okay, travelling along any coast will inevitably show lighthouses. And it's the same along the Galle ramparts: You come across a lighthouse. Nice, but nothing to make an extra effort (and you don't have to)

Whilst at the old Fort and more out of curiosity decided to walk down to the lighthouse. I suspect it does very well in warning shipping of nearby rocks etc.....but it might have had more impact seeing it in action after dark.

Really, during the day, it just a structure, much like most lighthouses.
