Our first time in Sri Lanka and we booked a year in advance looking for a hotel for 2 weeks of well earned R&R after a busy year and a trip to the F1 in Abu Dhabi. Not knowing quite what to expect from Niyagama House we were very pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the grounds the wonderful house and the warm welcome from the host and staff. As we were a little ahead of the busy season, much of the time we were the only residents, which was amazing. We upgraded to the Pearl room which was superb with an fantastic bathroom and a large balcony - everything was top quality. With only 7 rooms in the house the place feels very exclusive and quiet. The weekly lunch and dinner menu was very varied and all food was freshly prepared to order. The curries were wonderful and changed daily - mostly vegetarian but they do a fantastic prawn curry! Prices for food of this quality was very reasonable compared to similar food we experienced elsewhere (nearer the National Parks, for example). It was such a pleasant place to be that we did not venture too far from the house, except to visit Galle, and a couple of National Parks. (the weather in week one was pretty wet and stormy so travelling was not recommended!). There are some great walks around the tea plantations - if you are into plants and bird-watching, this place is a paradise. My wife and I are both Yoga novices but Elke guided us through a private intro class which was very enjoyable. I also tried the aerial yoga later in the week which was quite an experience and also very good. Elke is very experienced and takes you through every step carefully.
I could go on and on about how nice this place is: to sum up, if you are looking for a special and peaceful location to unwind, with great food, wonderful service and luxurious accommodation, you wont go far wrong.
