Very good start to our safari in Tanzania. The room is comfortable and clean with hot showers. Andy is a wonderful host and will ensure all your needs are catered for. The evening meal in the restaurant was excellent. Very good value for money.

Room Tip: All rooms are the same and away from traffic

Andy, Lillian and family/staff were so welcoming upon our arrival to Tumaini Cottage. We traveled as a somewhat rambunctious group of six friends who came to climb Kilimanjaro and go on safari. The Tumaini team quickly became like family and helped us logistically very much throughout our two weeks in Tanzania. They arranged rides into town for us, held our bags while we were hiking and on safari, and did laundry for us after our hike.

The grounds are beautiful, very secure, and there are occasionally monkeys that will hop between the trees to eat the fresh avocados. Andy and his team made us local cuisine for dinner (ugali!) with hand picked spinach from their garden. The breakfasts were delicious with fresh fruit and Tanzanian coffee as well. The beds were so comfy and have mosquito nets that work very well. The hot and cold water was key after our hike up Kili.

They greeted us with fresh pressed juice from their mango trees every time we came back from one of our treks and sent us on our way with locally grown coffee. We put our pins in the map as well which showed just how many people from around the world choose to stay at Tumaini Cottage. We would love to come back again and would recommend to anyone!

This was the final night of our safari adventure in Tanzania and none of the three adults in our group slept comfortably. There were two main issues, the first being that the mattresses are thin foam mattresses and the second being that the mosquito nets are badly designed and have gaps at the top of the net which allow for mosquitoes to get through. On top of this, there's no ceiling fan or A/C which usually help keep mosquitoes away.

The mattresses are thin foam rubber - not thick foam or inner sprung. A full sized western male (6ft 2inch) with a normal BMI for his height could feel the wooden slats underneath him all night long. The other adult in our group had the same problem. No one likes feeling wooden slats underneath them all night. When you finish a long, physically exhausting safari you really want a good mattress and these did not do the job for us. The third adult in our group had mosquito issues. The beds have mosquito nets, but at the top of the nets where they hang on the bed there are gaps between where they've overlaid the mosquito net and attached it to the four post bed. Mosquitoes got in between those gaps and despite the net being down two mosquitoes got in and feasted all night long (yes mosquito repellent with deet was used but the mosquitoes bit anyway). There was no A/C which we already knew, but we did expect a ceiling fan. Usually, if there's no A/C then a ceiling fan going during the night helps everyone sleep more comfortably.

Apart from the uncomfortable mattresses, gaps in the mosquito nets, and there being no fan in the rooms the cottage is lovely. It's very clean and the grounds are beautiful. The owners take a lot of care and are meticulous in keeping the property looking clean and inviting. The bathroom was fine and there was plenty of hot water and the water pressure was very good.

The cottage is definitely a bit remote, so if you actually want to visit Arusha then I would recommend finding someplace closer to town. There's really nothing within in walking distance of Tumaini and it's quite far away from the main road, so it's not like you can just step out and hail a taxi.

Honestly, despite the wonderful host (Andy) and his team we would not go back again. The beds were just too uncomfortable. The host is wonderful and the grounds are beautiful, but a good nights sleep was what we were after and we did not get it here.

Room Tip: There's no elevator, so if you don't like stairs ask for a ground floor room

Thanks again for taking a moment to review our Tumaini Cottage Arusha accommodation. We are excited that you enjoyed how we always keep the property looking clean and inviting and that our bathroom supplied plenty of hot water and the water pressure was very good since this is an issue for our part of the world. The cottage is definitely chosen specifically so as to avoid the hustle and noisy Arusha city center, thus providing our customers with a more relaxing, quiet and secure which is what we have always work hard to provide for guests while providing a much needed employment to our little society around us. I apologize that we didn't meet your standards this time around, and would also like to point it out that we had offered a room upstairs which had a longer bed for your size but you declined it due to it being upstairs and that we can understand. Our poster beds are locally designed to fit the mosquito nets and have never had any problems before but since you pointed it out we will make sure that we communicate well with all our customers on how to use the nets. We have never had any mattress issue and always keep up with the updates so it did come as a surprise that it was even an issue to begin with but with. We are grateful for you staying with us and giving your review which always helps us to provide the best authentic Tanzania experience to our customers at an affordable rate. We hope we get a chance to serve you again.

We had an incredible experience at Tumaini! Andy was a wonderful host, ready with fresh juice when we arrived and happy to help with everything we needed (storing luggage, airport pickup/dropoff). The rooms were spotless and there was plenty of hot water, which made all the difference after coming back from safari. Aside from the excellent accommodations, it was the personal treatment that really made all the difference for us. When we left for the airport to continue our travels, we forgot our camera in the room. Unfortunately, we didn't realize until we'd arrived at Kilimanjaro airport (an hour's drive away). We called, and Andy jumped in his car and drove the camera to us before our flight left. Everything about Tumaini Cottage and about Andy and his family really made it feel like we were visiting friends rather than just staying in a hotel. We couldn't recommend Tumaini any more highly!
