We had an overnight trip to Carmelo and stayed in Campo Tinto, the staff their sent us on our bicycles two blocks to Almacen de la Capilla and we are so happy they did! The setting was absolutely stunning!!

We had a tour from the lovely Diana (I think that was her name) who showed us the shop and wine cellar before sending us off to wander through the vines. After a lovely little walk we came back to a beautiful table with a gorgeous view just outside the Almacen where Diana poured us our first of about 6-8 different glasses, all the wines were really good and we had a delicious ham and cheese platter, the olive oil was so tasty we took 4 bottles all the way back to the UK with us too!

Diego the owner came out towards our 5th glass to show us another wine and he was lovely too, everyone was so friendly and it was a really relaxing atmosphere throughout. I think we paid about $25 and considering we took away wines and oil it was excellent value for money.

I would go here time and time again and have recommended it to all of my Uruguayan family to take the trip from Montevideo!

We will return on our next visit to Uruguay I promise! Thank you for a truly fantastic day :)

If you want a real local experience, A Cordano is the place. Diego and Ana Paula are 5th generation owners of this vineyard. They have a romantic honeymoon cottage in the middle of the vineyards, they have fun wines, a great store, and can create an extraordinary asado or barbecue. You can come just for a tasting, or use it as a home base to see rural Uruguay.

We were in Colonia, took a bus to Carmelo and then a taxi to the winery. Great day with Diego and his wife. Tried all the wines, cheese and ham with the local olive oil. Everything fantastic. Thank god I was not driving as I slept in the bus back to Colonia.

We are on our honeymoon and decided to come try some wine in Carmelo. We were told to stay in hotel Narbona as "the best" here, but where unable to find a free room. So we looked around and found this magnificent place, were you get full attention from the owners. Great views, great wine and most of all, great hospitality. Highly recommended

Is Cordano the best tasting wine you ever had? No -- but this winery produces it for local consumption in large jugs. We saw signs advertising Cordano on several bars in Carmelo. Capilla also produces labeled wines that are good and can be served at your table with friends. But what we really enjoyed was the honey flavored grappa. This grappa was the only bottle of wine or spirits that we brought back from our trip. We served it the next week to friends who are well acquainted with Italian grappa. Their opinion -- the smoothest that they had ever tasted. A real surprise. When have you heard about Uruguayan grappa?

How does Capilla earn its excellent rating? Besides the grappa, it was pleasing to experience a small vineyard producing wines in a unpretentious way for local and wider consumption. Although the tasting room and store appeals to the tourist trade, it also has the charm and simplicity that would make locals comfortable to come in for a glass of wine or maybe a shot of grappa at the end of the day.
