We couldn't have been more pleased with the wonderful food, service, and ambiance we found at What Else. We had already been in the area once when we ate at Nu, so we were happy to go back to the cute, quiet alley both restaurants are located in. At first we were curious to know why the restaurant was empty, having seen the many great reviews. When we tried the food, we were shocked that more people weren't skipping the over-priced morsels you find at Nu for the complex, generous, and expertly crafted dishes found at What Else.
We ordered a variety of things because we assumed that, like many Vietnamese restaurants, the portions would leave us wanting a bit more. We were surprised by how generous the portions were, but even more so by the quality and abundance of the meat and various ingredients.
We have gone twice in two days, and have enjoyed the pomelo salad with chicken and shrimp (massive and delicious), the banh xeo/Vietnamese fried pancake (our favourite, with fresh herbs, rice paper and delicious dipping sauce), lemongrass chicken (juicy, slow cooked chicken), chicken curry (not spicy but full of flavour and melt-in-your-mouth chicken), and the banana fruit salad (the perfect amount of spice). To finish it off, the coconut or chocolate ice cream are a must!!
This restaurant is made possible by the head cook and owner, a lovely woman who has generosity and wisdom beyond her years, and great English as well. We were so grateful for the personalized service and incredible dining experience. a
As foodies who gravitate towards authenticity and warm conversation, this quaint, overlooked restaurant has more to offer than we imagined, and at incredibly reasonable prices to boot!
Thank you What Else!!
