We couldn't have been more pleased with the wonderful food, service, and ambiance we found at What Else. We had already been in the area once when we ate at Nu, so we were happy to go back to the cute, quiet alley both restaurants are located in. At first we were curious to know why the restaurant was empty, having seen the many great reviews. When we tried the food, we were shocked that more people weren't skipping the over-priced morsels you find at Nu for the complex, generous, and expertly crafted dishes found at What Else.

We ordered a variety of things because we assumed that, like many Vietnamese restaurants, the portions would leave us wanting a bit more. We were surprised by how generous the portions were, but even more so by the quality and abundance of the meat and various ingredients.

We have gone twice in two days, and have enjoyed the pomelo salad with chicken and shrimp (massive and delicious), the banh xeo/Vietnamese fried pancake (our favourite, with fresh herbs, rice paper and delicious dipping sauce), lemongrass chicken (juicy, slow cooked chicken), chicken curry (not spicy but full of flavour and melt-in-your-mouth chicken), and the banana fruit salad (the perfect amount of spice). To finish it off, the coconut or chocolate ice cream are a must!!

This restaurant is made possible by the head cook and owner, a lovely woman who has generosity and wisdom beyond her years, and great English as well. We were so grateful for the personalized service and incredible dining experience. a
As foodies who gravitate towards authenticity and warm conversation, this quaint, overlooked restaurant has more to offer than we imagined, and at incredibly reasonable prices to boot!

Thank you What Else!!

Thank you a lot for your nice review. We do our best to make our customers satisfied and happy in our family place. Almost all of our products are fresh of the day and we try to mix western and vietnamese tastes. We like have time to take care of our customers and serve the best dishes we can. Still many thanks to you and we hope to see you again.

While reading various Trip Advisor reviews for dinner spots in Hoi An, I undoubtedly come across "best restaurant in Hoi An" reviews for every place I scanned. I can sincerely say that 'What Else Cafe' has exceeded all other restaurants and is easily the Best Food I've eaten in Hoi An, possibly all of Vietnam so far.

My wife and I stumbled across this restaurant as it is in close proximity to Nu Eatery (also excellent food, but portions are too small). We were seated on a beautiful outdoor patio, but were shocked to see an almost empty restaurant at a peak rush hour time. After tasting the food, we were blown away there wasn't a wait-list to get a table at this amazing restaurant.

My wife and I shared many excellent dishes: A superb Ban Xeo (Vietnamese Pancake) with fresh herbs and rice paper; A delicious Pomelo salad with excellent contrasting flavours; juicy Lemongrass chicken that was perfectly seasoned; a surprising Chicken Curry that rivaled many Indian dishes I've tried; and to finish it off, two tasty bowls of coconut and chocolate ice cream. We certainly could have gotten away with ordering less as the portion sizes were large, but were glad to try all the delicious home-cooked food.

After praising the food highly to our server, the owner, a lovely young lady, came to our table and talked to us about her restaurant and life. She cooks all the food with her mother and has a true passion for her work. Lovely lady that will soon have a popular restaurant on her hands.

Please ensure you try this restaurant out while in Hoi An. You may find it quiet, but this is a hidden gem that will soon be as popular and reviewed as it's neighbour next door.

I loved this little cafe, it was so beautiful and the food was delious, I ended up going a couple of times on my few days in Hoi An. The staff were so friendly and the atmosphere was nice, a street back from heavy pedastrians. Would defintely recommend :)

Really lovely lady who served us a great meal. Would recommend the spring rolls and summer rolls in particular! Lots of veggie options in a nice location away from the mayhem.
