We arrived on Showa Day April 29,a national holiday that celebrates birthday of Showa Emperor, Hirohito, (Dec 25, 1926-Jan 7, 1989). We decided to skip Goryokaku Tower, line too long. Instead, our tour guide took us to Goryokaku Park for the highlight of the cherry blossom festival and picnickers. The trees are numbered for tracking purposes. Cherry Blossom Festival commemorates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo to the city of Washington DC and honors the lating friendship of our two countries.
