Great location and great thermostat

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 5 Mar 2020
Nice hotel, in good shape. Beds were very comfortable. The location can't be beat - you're right across the street from the Otaru Canal - great for seeing the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival.

The bathroom area was nice in that there was a sink in the shower/toilet area, and another one in the vanity (?) area. Good for 2 people to get ready.

The thermostat in the room was great - you could switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit (great for those of us who are Celsius-challenged). This is was one of the only hotels we stayed at in our Japan trip that had buttons clearly marked in both Japanese and English. And, it was one of the only hotels we stayed at on our trip where you could actually cool the room down enough (A/C came on), as many of the hotels were unbearably warm in the winter. Seems that most of the Japanese hotels we stayed at only let you change the temperature within a certain heating range, and were not able to cool it down past a certain point. Kudos to this hotel for allowing guests to set the temperature as needed

In the height of Coronavirus scare, our bathrooms weren't cleaned at all when we checked in. The toilet room had a very bad fermented fish odor & the bathroom door was very sticky. Inside of the bathtub had a huge soap scum around the rim. After I cleaned the toilet room & bathtub, it smelled much better. It's a shame that the management doesn't take the Coronavirus scare seriously for their guests. They are protecting all of their employees with disposable masks but not for their paying guests!

Dear Guest, Thank you for staying at Hotel Nord Otaru. I am sorry to hear that the preparation of the bathroom and toilet was not sufficient, despite the fact that you chose our hotel among many others for your stay. I apologize for any discomfort it may have caused you.Our cleaning crews work hard to pay close attention to each room and ensure comfortable conditions for our guests. However, we are aware we failed to welcome you with such a room, and caused you a great inconvenience and discomfort. On the other hand, we are delighted to learn that you were satisfied with our location. Taking your feedback into serious consideration, we will try to improve our services and operation so that we can bring more comfortable accommodation to our guests. Last but certainly not least, we appreciate you taking the precious time to share your experience with us. Sincerely, Dobashi, Manager, Hotel Nord Otaru

The best thing about Hotel Nord Otaru is they have rooms with 4 beds that can sleep 4 adults and one child at a below average price. It is my second time here because I found it to be a good deal. The room is clean, hotel is (walkable with luggage) from train station, hokkaido access ski bus stops at the hotel too! My advise is to check on the available ski bus schedule before planning the number of days stay so that you can plan your trip better if you intend to travel by ski bus in winter. We stayed 4 nights and had 3 full days to enjoy eating in the various restaurants in Otaru and let kids try glass making.

The location, right on the Otaru Canal, was perfect. It was easy to walk everywhere that one would want to see in this small, charming city. The breakfast buffet was also wonderful, with western and Japanese options, including some Hokkaido specialties.

The room was a little dated. The furniture, wallpaper, and bedside electrical controls were reminiscent of a 70s/80s James Bond film. I kind of liked that old-school, retro charm to some degree but some light refreshing wouldn't hurt. Everything was kept very clean though.

Staff was friendly.

One of the finest hotel in Otaru. The hotel design brings me memory back to scandinavian hotel.
Have all the amenities including complimentary carpark and coffee on the go for hotel guest (9am onwards). Breakfast is good with spread variety.
Would recommend and will definitely come back again.
