“Beautiful Discovery”

The Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery
Reviewed 24 May 2017 via mobile

This place is a little out of the way but well worth a visit. When you come through the gate you will be facing this cemetery on a downward facing slope..the feeling is so serene and very comforting. You cannot walk through but you can admire the beauty of the place. There are plaques showing lists of foreign officers who have perished and were buried here.

There is a historical tour of famous people resting there by a registered guide on holiday and weekends. Also a small museum at the top of the cemetery with interesting historical background off the cemetery and Yokohama dating to 1800's.

The history behind this cemetery is amazing. Its located above Motomachi Shopping street. You can actually take a elevator located in the Motomachi train station, it will take you to the top of the station which is a small park and walk up the hill to what they call the "Bluff" It's the area of Yokohama that was given to foreigners to settle many, many years ago or if you want some exercise you can walk up the 200 steps to harbor view park . Great views of the Bay Bridge and many old homes belonging to foreigners from all over the world, now restored, line the street. Again, if you have the time it's worth checking out, especially if you are a history buff.

The Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery is located just above Motomachi on the Bluff. It has graves of foreigners who lived and died in Yokohama since the middle of the 19th Century. The paths are well preserved and the cemetery very green. From Spring to Summer the cemetery is open on weekends (Y200 donation) for tourists to walk a set course to see some of the more famous graves. There is a display room by the entrance (that is open when the cemetery is open) with and English and Japanese display of the most famous internments. If you want to see a specific grave, you can contact the cemetery in advance for permission to enter.

Well worth a visit if you are a history buff.

Tip: There is an elevator and escalators at the back of the Minato Mirai Motomachi station that will take you most of the way up the hill to the Bluff which is nice on a hot day. There are also coin lockers at the station.

I couldn't walk around in the cemetary because the stairs leading down were closed, but it looked very nice from above. Almost as a forest with gravestones. And it is very well maintained, looks clean. The big memorial stones with the names of all the bodies resting there are impressive.
A huge thank you and respect for Japan to preserve a cemetery like that for foreigners.
I wish I could see everything inside.
