I spent two nights at the Hotel New Yokosuka during a recent business trip. The hotel is located very close to the Navy Base, and is therefore convenient for those walking over for business. It is also located in the compact entertainment district, removed from most of the traffic noise.
The lobby is dark and a little dreary, and it definitely gives off the vibe of a budget hotel. They take you payment upon check-in, which is also a little odd. It removes the option of using any remaining local currency against your bill, as you have to pre-pay. They also use physical keys for the rooms, and require that you turn them in whenever you leave the hotel. Oddly, too, they also use physical tickets to redeem for breakfast in the morning, which only adds to the bare-bones feel to much of the hotel.
The rooms, however, are a step above. My studio was quite large, with a comfortable bed, operating HVAC (though there is no degree-based thermostat), small kitchen, and workable bathroom. I heard no noise from the hallway or neighboring room, but was awakened one night by a fight out in the street.
The breakfast is perhaps the most "motel-y" feature of this hotel. There is a small and somewhat dingy looking cafeteria line, where you can order fresh eggs or select from a variety of western and traditional foods. The selection, however, is sparse, and the quality was very basic. It was not a pleasant experience on either morning.
This place is basic, and if you get a good rate, I'm sure it's competitive. The rooms and location are good -- the "softer products" are not.
