“Pretty when cherry trees in bloom”

Morioka Castle Ruins
Reviewed 28 May 2017

We were lucky in that the cherry trees were still in bloom. It was very pretty there but wouldn't be much to see out of season. Castle foundations were impressive.

A tranquil spot in the midst of Morioka City to unwind, have a picnic or simply just read a book. The mountain ridge in the background provides a stunning backdrop to enjoy the sunset. Or follow the small creek that winds through the park for a quiet saunter.

We arrived at peak cherry blossom time and hanami was in full force. A fair was being held behind the ruins with food and performers during the day and night and coming back at night when the lanterns were lit among the sakura was enchanting, completely magical.

Beautiful gardens and paths to stroll. Great views from the castle grounds. Walk along the stream and admire the fish swimming.

We visited just in time at the peak cherry blossom (April 20 - 25). By the way, this is an early for Morioka cherry blossom according to a local. It was beautiful, especially you walk through cherry blossom tunnels. I recommend go both day and night as during cherry blossom festival, the cherry blossom trees are lit up, and you can observe unique Japanese tradition (Hanami, people gather with foods and alcohol in cheery atmosphere). There are food vendors, but the price is a bit more, so we bought alcohol/food from convenience stores nearby.

I also recommend to stop by weekend. We happened to see Tsugaru Shamisen performance on Sunday during Earth Day or Green Festival. It seems this site is often used for public festivals.

The site has no castle as the name ("ruin") suggests. Now only stone walls remain. It's a nice walk through multi-layer structure and Koi fish pond near the Sakurayama Shrine.
