I would like to lodge an official complain regarding our experience with JR House. We came in a big group (4 families comprising of 9 adults and 6 children between the ages of 1 and 4) on 19/12/2015, and were expecting to arrive at a house that was clean and dust free. Unfortunately, the place was not as clean as we expected. The bedroom fans behind the beds were all laden with dust!

And one of the biggest indications that we were going to be disappointed was when we saw a note that was left under the car wipers informing us that the tap water is not even suitable for washing utensils due to the untreated water source. The expensive daily rate that JR House is charging should have justified at least a water filter to be installed, or at least inform us face to face. Imagine preparing meals, especially for the kids, where we have to boil the water just to wash the utensils and vegetables! At the very minimum, we should have been informed before we made our trip, so that we would come prepared, but this was not the case.

We also found out that we were not allowed to use the villa facilities (swimming pool, sundeck etc) because of the high demand from other Shorea guests. This was a different message we got from the website. Weren’t we also Shorea guests?

We were also disappointed that no one briefed us about the jungle trekking, walking in the fruit orchards, and other group activities. There were no brochures or leaflets, no phone number to call and ask. It felt like we were paying money to be stuck in a house with untreated tap water.

Mosquito and bug repellents were incomplete, and some unusable. The room windows did not have mosquito nettings, so we had to sleep with windows closed, which made the rooms stuffy!

The wooden floors had some nail heads jutting out, making it unsafe for children.

Breakfast the next day was served late (after 9AM) even though we requested for breakfast to be served earlier. And the chicken that was served for breakfast was not cooked! So we had to re-heat it by ourselves.

All in all, for the price we paid for, we would expect more in terms of the quality of the villa as a whole, the cleanliness and up keeping, as well as the facilities provided.

I will not recommend this place to anyone, because of the lack of professionalism and engagement from Shorea. The only thing we were looking forward was when we were about to leave this horrid place. For RM2650 per night, it was a complete disaster of a holiday, one that we hope not to relive in the future.

Room Tip: Look elsewhere...

Dear Eva,

Thank you for staying with us on 19 Dec 2015 and your feedback on 28 Dec 2015.

Immediately upon receiving you feedback we had carried out a thorough investigation into the same. We checked with Ms Roza and Ms Malani who were at your service during your stay. However we realised that we could no longer verify the complaints, on food and cleanliness as we received your feedback more than 1 week after your stay with us at JR House. According to Roza, she sent you a Welcome WhatsApp message and called you before you check in on 19 Dec 2015. She also sent you a Feedback massage after you checked out on 20 Dec 2015. However, there was no response from you. Neither she nor Malani, heard from you throughout your stay on the issues you had now brought up. However, we would take heed of your feedback to see how we could seek our guests feedback instantly.

In respect of your feedback on the difficulties you faced accessing the pool at the Shorea, you will recall that when we sent you a confirmation email on your booking with us on 17 Nov 2015, we had said that 'JR House is a nearby house with no swimming pool' whilst attaching details about the jungle trekking and the ostrich farm activities. Similar descriptions were also made available to all guests or intended guests on our website.

In respect of your complaint on the water source, we wish to clarify that our guests interests and wellbeing remain our top priority. As we were not able to verify that the source of water that supplies to the entire Kampung Kolam Air, Pantai, we had, our of abundance of caution, advised our guests not to consume the same. That was also why boiled and mineral water was made available, in abundance, during your stay.

We must express our utmost regrets that you had not enjoyed your stay at the JR House. We wish such matters were brought to our attention during your stay so that we had the opportunity to attend to them immediately. Do rest assure that we will continuously look into the issues that you had raised to ensure the comfort of our guests.

warmest regards
Elaine

Shorea falls under the same concept as other nearby forest getaways; The Dusun and Awanmulan notably. All tout a wilderness getaway in seclusion with privacy and therein I will make my comparison in this review as I have been to the Dusun last year.

The Great...
We took the Bougainvillea. The room was large and spacious for the advertised 3 people. It comes with a nice balcony with an amazing view of the forest. We were fortunate that the first night we were there, it coincided with a meteor shower. The seclusion and lack of light pollution made it a beautiful experience watching the falling stars.
There were a few cats and dogs about. If you're not an animal fan, this may be a negative but I love pets and this was nice. Adds to a homely feeling. Mind you, the 2 cats and 1 dog were all well cared for and clean, so kudos! The cats especially reign as they go where they please; we were indeed guests in their home :) If you're averse to animals, just tell the staff and they will be locked away to avoid any interruptions to your stay.
The bathroom was HUGE! Good shower facilities and a makeshift bath-tub-in-the-floor concept with good water flow and clean toiletries. Do bring your own toothbrush and paste though; this is not a hotel. They do mention this in the brochure, so don't blame them if you forget on this. Pool towels are also provided with poolside chairs available at the deck below the room balcony.
Breakfast is served daily... LOVE the nasi lemak. The sambal was done with a generous amount of traditional ingredients. We couldn't resist topping up the spicy sambal and the staff lady was more than happy to re-stock our sambal serving several times :)

The Good...
The private kitchen was adequate with a sink, refrigerator and a double-stove. Slightly tight for two people to use, but it was definitely a bit more spacious than the one at Dusun (albeit, it was a smaller room too). Not many utensils are available but you can always grab stuff you need from the common kitchen area. You are welcome to use other items from the common area such as blender, oven and deep-fryer.
Any meal aside from breakfast is entirely on your own, so stock up on your ingredients and cook away. We had a great time preparing our meals here and they also have a good array of standard dried spices in the common area. Just remember to finish cooking your dinner meals before the sun goes down; the lighting is minimal and not too great for cooking in the dark.
The bed were alright, and the comforter just the right thickness as not to be too warm. Not a big fan of spring beds, but the pillows were comfortable.

The Bad...
The 3 villas are all located facing a common infinity pool and with quick access to the common kitchen area. Nice in theory, but it also means that the villas are relatively close to each other and each villa overlooks the other.
With respect to privacy, I'm not a big fan of this layout. It would be perfect if a large family booked all 3 villas as the layout seems to better meet that need. At Dusun, even if the villas are side-by-side, they're not really facing each other. You almost can forget that there's a neighboring villa. That is not the case here as we were constantly aware of the other guests in the villa. Feels more like an average chalet experience, unfortunately.

The Ugly...
And then there was the pool. It looks amazing and one of my friend managed to take a dip, and he truly enjoyed it. Where it got bad is related to my comment on the villa layout. We were very unfortunate that on the second day of our 3-day stay, a large group moved into Villa Shorea+Halia. The group included tenants from another Shorea private collections spot but they convened in the Shorea. They completely dominated the pool and were very inconsiderate with their noise levels and truly killed our spirit for enjoying a private, quiet getaway.
This place should really have a strict no day-visitor policy. The private collections serve a much large group and any congregations should be done there instead. Let's just say we came in enjoying the trip, but left feeling rather disappointed.
There was one really friendly indian lady in staff and she did her best to come check on us that evening if everything was alright. She explained that it was difficult to control that group but they were told to keep it down. We appreciate this service and courtesy, but it wasn't clear if all the staff (including the management) take this into consideration. I read a similar review on TripAdvisor some time back, but I assumed this has been resolved as the official response from the management indicated that they have looked into this. Whatever they did, it just was not enough.

Verdict:
Did we like the venue? Yes. The rooms and amenities were great. The staff were friendly and accommodating.

Would we come back? Unfortunately, no. The rooms are rated much higher than similar options in the area, but it does not boast the private, quiet experience that the Dusun provides for less. Maybe bigger groups would appreciate it, but it is not one for small groups or couples. Your experience may vary depending on luck; we had the unfortunate experience of overlapping with a rowdy group. The fact that this is a point of concern already takes away from the value of this place.

Our room was upgraded to Villa Shorea on the arrival day. You need not to check in, call a Indian lady she will bring you in.
The breathtaking view and peace scene around The Shorea has enough to said.
Take note, you must buy your crisps, bakeries, wines, mixers, alcohols, rice, noodles, chicken and so for for your lunch and dinner.
You must be a cooker, the utilize those almost fully equipped kitchen.
Oh yeah, the salted swimming pool can't fit too much, bring your puppy or kitty, they are pet friendly.

Ms. Malini the owner was very welcoming and she leaves basic provisions for every guest group.

The main attraction of JR House is the long wooden Verandah overlooking the Mountain of tropical rainforest.

They have a LCD TV which you can bring your own usb with movies & board games.
The dvd player which was being repaired would be good for those who bring their movies on dvds.

Great for couples or groups of friends.
I plan to escape here once every Quarter with a good book facing the mountain and look forward to Tropical Rains with a cup of Hot Coffee at hand.

Mr Patrick is very helpful. The villa I've stay in is Plassid Villa. Complete kitchen utensil is provided, included seasoning; salt, pepper, sugar! They even provide outdoor BBQ grill tools too~ all you need is just bring your food and prep it there.

Very cozy villa~
just beware of stepping onto bees when you walk around in the house.
