My father is super glad we chose Muntri Mews for our stay. He was returning to his home town after being away 50 years in the United States and wanted to showcase for us kids what he loved so much about the Malaysia of his childhood. We want to extend a special thanks to the management and staff for a very special stay immersed in the heritage district of Penang. The apartments are tastefully furnished with modern comforts while paying respect to the hardworking people that at one time ran businesses and raised families within these buildings. Highlights of the heritage district are all within walking distance and traffic is very pedestrian friendly. Our building was situated on a quiet smaller street off Penang Street. The adjoining cafe with excellent local menu and service was a definite plus as was the complimentary breakfast. Strolling through the streets at night and sampling the street foods and mingling with locals and tourists was a delight. Upon check-in, the manager on duty quickly accommodated the addition of my grandmother, who had joined us unexpectedly, by upgrading us to a larger apartment for a very reasonable extra charge. Signing off with much appreciation to the owner, managers(s), and staff!

On the positive side, the "heritage" design mixing antique elements with contemporary layout is very pretty and the location is perfect: just a 5 minute walk from various cafes, bars and restaurants on Love Lone and Lebuh Chulia. There are also several museums and historical sites within 15 mins walk.

On the negative side, the hotel appears quiet on arrival but can get noisy at night. Depending on your room you might be disturbed by either foot steps on the wooden floorboards of the room above, backpackers talking all night in the neighbouring hostel, or the sounds of the nearby temples. Also, while I didn't mind the firm mattresses, my wife found them too hard.

Room Tip: Family rooms are double the size of standard rooms, and in a separate building across the street with more common areas to rest and relax.

Spacious room, good sturdy queen sized beds. Excellent location in the heart of George Town. Friendly staff and very knowledgeable team. Well equip rooms with hair dryer, shower gel, shampoo, TV (with 3 cable channels), sofa which can double up as a bed as well and a nice cosy sitting area. Umbrellas are readily available as well for those sudden downpours.

Will suggest a ground level room if you have mobility issues. However, I could hear neighbours upstairs walking in their room the entire night. Didn't help that the wooden floors creaked with every step. But a pair of ear plugs resolved everything. Wifi isn’t that great in my room (room E) but we understand that it’s due to the restricted cabling issues within the old town. Wifi at the cafe was excellent though and it’s just steps away. Don’t forget to chill out at the gazebo area but we careful of the mosquitoes!

Special thanks to Brandon at the reception for being so helpful with his local recommendations.

Breakfast at cafe was great too. Menu was ala carte style which is a nice change to the usual buffet breakfasts. Service at cafe was excellent as well and Mum felt so at home despite not being fluent in English. It is like a home away from home!

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms will be better for those with mobility issues

My husband and I have just stayed here for four days. The hotel is in an excellent location. We stayed in a room on the other side of the road from the Mews Cafe. Very large room. We had a couple of meals at the hotel which were very good. Andy, AJ and the rest of the staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble for them. I would definitely recommend staying here.

Unique stay in the middle of the old town. Eye for detail and style both on the restored outside of the hotel building, the 'town garden',professional, nice staff and above all the comfortable and spacious rooms.
