Jawi Peranakan cuisine at its best! Absolutely love everything about this place. The cosy ambience, beautiful wooden dining furniture and a historic display of photos through time gives it a nostalgic feel. My husband and I ordered a kerabu mangga, mutton briyani, colonial lemon tart for lunch, all washed down with a mighty refreshing glass of nutmeg juice. Divine fusion of flavours and textures, a true gastronomic journey with every mouthful. It was definitely one of our best lunches in Penang - great service, reasonably priced too!

We came here after Halab’s management dishonorably refused to honor our table booking number. Best decision we could have made. Penang is the food capital of Asia (i.e. of most of the inhabited world), and Jawi House Cafe is perched at the very summit of authentic Penang deliciousness. The sauces (everything in Penang is in the sauces!) are the best we’ve ever experienced. The dahl curry masalah (typically good, but not awesome at restaurants) is stunning. The beef rendang (good almost everywhere) is the best example we’ve ever tasted. And the biryani rice and peanut rice dishes are delicious with the sauces. The kerabu manggo was an excellent and refreshing starter. The nutmeg and lime drinks were just right. And the sago pudding was a great way to top it all off. The waiters and chefs were especially friendly despite having a full house. They answered our questions about the recipies. At one point one of them even called the owner to confirm that the dahl masalah we’d eaten was the same one described on a certain page in her recent recipie book The Penang Feast. Tonight the management at Halab was unhospitable; the management at Jawi House Cafe made up for it with warm hospitality and top notch delicious dishes.

This restaurant was well worth the evening, the Jawi Peranakan food was really delicious. We loved the nutmeg juice here, and the desserts were also great. We went here once for dinner and once for an afternoon snack. Totally recommend it. I regret not buying one of the cool cookbooks they sold in the back !

This restaurant is located within the George Town Heritage Zone, therefore parking spaces are rather limited here. That, however, does not mean that one should not be coming to dine here at all... rather, if you do choose to come to this area for your lunch/dinner, then restaurant this would be a huge recommendation. It specialises in traditional Peranakan cuisine, with a mixture of Arabic, Northern Indian, Pakistani, asd well as Malay dishes. In addition, with a nice setup here (accompanied by some slow music), this place does provide a great ambience for a lovely dining session among friends or for business discussions. The only downside (if I were to find one) is probably the generally small portions for each dish.
