A quiet island ten minutes from town with a terrific view!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 25 Jan 2017via mobile
This island Seppangar is situated just a short boat ride from the harbor, Jesselton Point, which makes it excellent for a short stay! We stayed for tree nights and that was perfect.
We had two and a half days in our chalet up on the hill. It's a stunning view from there! We could sit on the balcony among the tree tops, looking out over the ocean with the mountains and the silhouette of the town, surrounded by birds and monkeys! It sure was amazing!

The island is a green hill with a beach. Nine chalets to stay over night in and a restaurant and a small diving center.

It is also a nice place to visit for just a day trip!

What you should know is that the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and in between you cannot bye anything except some snacks and very expensive beers.
I am sorry to say that even if the food was good, it wasn't enough! During our stay there were two occasions when some dishes on the buffet was finished before we even got a taste of it.

Another thing that made us disappointed is all the things swimming in the water together with the fishes, like plastic bags, tires and empty bottles on the bottom.
The garbage from the sea with the town so near was flouting towards the island. The staff was out collecting some, but there were still to much left to really enjoy snorkeling.

The chalet we had was okey to us, small with a little space in the room, but a lovely view from the balcony. The shower is okey, but only could water.
The maintenance could have been better, but the staff was very helpful if there was something we pointed out that was needed, for example a broken fan that they replaced immediately when we asked.

I want to end the review by saying that we loved our stay here, cause of the beautiful nature so near town and can recommend it cause of that!

Very simple rooms, but still nice. Super friendly place with nice diving prices (75RM per dive if u have license). Tasty food though u can't choose anything.
BAD: lot of litter in the sea from nearby villages. They have a net to protect the beach, but it doesn't help much.
BEWARE: monkeys can come through windows. Sand flies - u will itch like hell for 5 days.
GOOD: Friendly, good diving, calm and not crowdy. Good food, kittens =)

Room tip: Beware of far hill rooms. About 200 stairs from beach will test u.

We arrived on Sepanggar with low expectations of the rooms and as such we were not disappointed. I had seen a few mixed reviews but decided to chance it anyway. The island is not as popular with day trippers as the other islands so it is very quiet. The food was reasonably good and the snorkelling not too bad. The staff in the office and booking counter in KK could not have been more helpful and they were genuinely lovely. However on arrival in the island the young man in charge was unbelievably unhelpful and lazy. Everything was too much trouble. We asked to go on a trek and were told that we could not because it might rain. I pointed out that there was hardly a cloud in the sky and he told me that we might be able to go the next day. Unfortunately though we were not able to go the next day because it was too windy, the 5mph winds were apparently capable of causing damage! I spent a bit of time watching this young man go about his business and I would say that for at least 80% of the day he was laid out on a hammock sleeping.
I really want his job! Mari Mari ... He needs sacking, he is useless and is creating bad reviews when there is no need!
I would urge nobody to go here until they have sorted out their staff and Accomodation ..... It could be so good! Get the power sorted as well it is not difficult these days with good solar power units available!

We came here after staying at Mari Mari Mantanani for 4 days, and this was suggested so that we can be close to airport for our departing flight. Even though it's under the same ownership, you can tell that Sepanggar was built later and to impress the Chinese tourists. It tried to have an industrial feel to it, but unfortunately in a jungle, that means all the bugs get to visit you at night. From the lovely fireflies on the your porch to ants and mosquitos and mosses showering with you. One thing that bugged me the most is that, the shower was separated from the room so you have to be covered in a towel to walk to shower and endure the bugs on the way.

The night view at Kota Kinabalu is for sure worth seeing with a good cup of Sabah Tea, and the jungle trekking was fun. But the snorkeling is terrible compare to Mantanani. The trash flows here, corals are dead, it's for the convenience and the 24hr electricity.

Room tip: Beach Villa might have a better chance for avoiding bugs.

Great place to get away from it all, and to lose all the tourists flocking to the islands. We stayed in a sea view chalet which I highly recommend. Lovely staff, great food and lots of activities for those who want to keep busy. We had the beach to ourselves for three days. A touch of heaven!!

Went there for 3nights. The place is beautiful. You are in relaxing place and it's so nice to be out of the city.
By night you've a beautiful view to KK.
I really enjoyed my stay there but it needs some really important improvements.
I also say this because for the price I paid which is really expensive I expect perfect facilities.

1.We asked if they had wifi and they told us yes. Half of the time it wasn't working and the other half it wasn't possible to open an Internet page.

2.The food was really yummy. The 1st day we hadn't enough food. The staff to care about it for the rest of our stay. The lunch that we had 3 times was exactly the same everyday.
They don't have a kitchen so everything is coming from the main land so no food on the island. Bring snacks with you.
For more than a 100$US per day I expect at least some snack or fruit during the day or for tea around 16h.

3.No electric in the room. If you need charge you phone you've to go down to the common area (only 2 plugs for 10 rooms). You can't charge a laptop because they've only use solar energy and if everybody charge their laptops you don't have enough energy during the evening.

4.We had problems with water. No water in the morning for a shower or toilet or to brush your teeth. We even had problems with the toilet. We had to fill up the tank in the back manually to be able to flush.

5.Something small but for breakfast they have cold canned beans. Warming it wouldn't be a big deal. No toaster as well to toast your bread (I don't think this is a big investment to buy one after you need to be lucky and have electricity).

6.Most of the time you've tea and coffee but the staff don't check it often if it's cold or empty.

7.They could clean more. After breakfast/lunch/dinner they don't clean the table so when you come for the next meal you've the rest of food from the last meal on your table.
The room could be as well a bit cleaner. Again for more than 100$US I expect no dust under my bed.

In the end this place is nice. They have to do something about the price and the service they provide. Although putting down the price or make improvements on the facilities.
It's still a nice place and the staff try it best to make everything good for you.
