So my husband booked us to stay at The Pullman in Kuching for a night to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I believe he mentioned the occasion to the hotel when booking. It was a busy weekend for the hotel as it had just been the Rainforest World Music Festival, and they also had an education fair (very common to find these in hotels across this city) bringing many delegates to the hotel.
So we were on the 17th floor, in a standard double room, with ensuite bathroom (fairly standard styling and grade for most hotels these days). The bed was big, very comfortable, pillows were firm but comfy, sheets bright and clean, and we were greeted with a beautiful "kissing swans" towel sculpture with red rose petals (see accompanying picture) which was a lovely touch. I then rearranged the petals to our initials.. Ha ha!! Soppy me!!
The breakfast (rm55 / equiv about £10) was a buffet but had a huge range of offerings, from local noodles and laksa, to eggs, fried foods, fruits, cereals, pastries and cakes, juices, teas, coffees.. One of the best breakfasts I've had in a while.
We had asked for an early checkout, which was granted (which was nice) as we wanted to make use of the pool and relax a little before checking out.
So, this was where I felt the hotel let itself down a little.
The pool, although big enough and one depth pretty much across (1.2 - 1. 3 metres) was FREEZING!!!! Even though it was outside and Kuching is a hot place to live, I couldn't believe how cold it was. So, we thought we'd try the jacuzzi.. That too was even more FREEZING!! So much so that I couldn't even stand keeping my legs in. This was such a disappointment, because I was really looking forward to a nice relaxing morning.
The pool area was also lacking in chair / bed cushions so you couldn't sit on half of the furniture and the hotel's air-conditioning vents placed right over the swimming pool area, so whilst you are trying to relax, there is a constant loud hum of generators.
Another weird thing is that you access the pool from the elevators and through the conference area, so on this particular day, because there was an education fair on, as I was walking through with my swimmers on and my towel around me, whilst there were university stalls and lots of kids wandering about, which I thought was a bit wrong (the hotel could have put up a screen or something).
So, whilst I would definitely recommend the hotel for staying at if you are looking to go out and about in Kuching, I wouldn't say its the most relaxing of places to go, if that is what you are looking for.
