Opika is just two months old in one of the most popular shopping malls in the city. We initially thought it was just a grocery shop but noticed there was a restaurant at the rear tucked behind the shelves and racks. It can be a little difficult to notice - maybe the owners should consider some rearrangement. The interiors are cheerful and brightly colored. Crockery with catchy idioms adorn the walls. The menu offers both eastern and western dishes and for those who are particular about the organic purity, a % indicator accompanies each food item - interesting. But many items were still not available (due to supplier issues) much to our disappointment.
Of the things we had, the quinoa shrimp salad definitely stood out. This old world grain seems to be making a resurgence into our modern day diets and the way it is prepared here will certainly make it even more popular. The fusion of nyonya herbs, mango & citrus certainly made it appetizing and quite addictive! Swedish meatballs never sound very exciting but the version here with an apparent blend of beef, lamb and chicken was really delicious, moist and tender. Portions are very generous btw. We thought the grilled scallops served on a solid salt 'tile' was rather interesting though it had a tendency to make the food increasingly salty as the meal progressed. We also enjoyed the potato leek soup and pasta carbonara while the caesar salad lacked the vigor of the others. Many different types of juice combinations with interesting names like "Hangover" and "Booster" are available - very nice. They also charge RM0.50 for a glass of water - not so nice.
The creative effort put into each dish seemed sincere and genuine (the story about the chef makes an interesting read in the menu). We hope to come back to try more of their innovative dishes. An introductory discount of 15% on all normal meals is presently in place but we don't know how long that will last.
