We're sorry to read that Cathy A felt that Veranda Palmar Beach hotel has many things wrong with it. We are returning for the 9th consecutive time this year because of the many aspects of the hotel that are so very, very good. Yes, perhaps the rooms can be a little 'tired' but they are always cleaned regularly and any maintenance issues we have found are dealt with on the same day. The manager, Jean Marie, makes a point of asking if everything is fine and we know is quite happy to take up issues that are raised with him, as are all the other staff involved in the hotel. In fact, the service is second to none anywhere, with guest satisfaction high on everyone's agenda. The food varies day-to-day with some days better than others, but that's also to do with personal taste - and, yes, the breakfasts are excellent. We are really looking forward to our return in November and feel confident that we shall have an excellent three-week experience of this lovely hotel and its staff.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms really have wonderful views.

We have noted several discrepancies between the conditions of our purchase & the hotel's real offer.
1. Check out time, on the printed document with the conditions we took along, it clearly stated that we could leave the room at 15:00. No mention of check out at 12:00
2. It was mentioned on our conditions that the bar was opened till 23:30. The hotel staff mentioned that the bar closes at 23:00.
3. The conditions simply mentioned FREE snorkeling. When we went to the boat house to get the diving gears, the person at the boathouse said "ou pas gagne droit prend sa" in a very rude way. When we asked for explanations he just repeated what he had told us previously without any explanations. This was very unpleasant feeling because we felt like we were treated like a bunch of dumb idiots instead of being treated as clients. We went to the reception for explanations where we talked to Ravi, who was kinder than his colleague. He explained that the hotel organised one trip a day for snorkeling (which you hadn't mentioned on your conditions)
3. It was mentioned FREE WiFi. In the rooms, the wifi was not very good. We learnt from the staff that it was better near the reception & by the pool area.
4. The conditions mentioned Live entertainment daily. There was none on Friday. There was a sega show on Saturday.

We have had to go to the reception or discuss with Mr Shiv or Ravi who seemed to be some kind of supervisor to sort out those petty things. It did not make our stay enjoyable.
At Veranda Palmar Beach, the service at the bar was not the best we had experienced at any hotel we've been before. We have learnt from the staff that they have to do several tasks during the day. The bar service was very slow on Friday, each barman or barmaid has a way of doing a same cocktail, once its creamy, the next time its brownish, the other time its got too much alcohol or the taste is completely different.
The food was decent but the dessert was poor. The Chef, was one of the few people who took time to come out of his kitchen to talk to the clients & get their feedback. He even offered us a nice dinner on Saturday. The Kids Club was excellent (the only ones) both Ladies, Charlene & Sylvette showed real interest with the kids, they made us feel welcome to the kids club & the children spent the whole day on Saturday & Sunday there. Oliver the guy from the animation came to introduce himself & Elvis from the bar was just above the others there. When his shift was over, it was no longer the same quality of service all round. Overall, It was not a pleasent stay & there's NO WAY we would go there agai even if it were FREE.

We have just returned from 11 nights stay at this hotel and have very mixed feelings about it, when reviewing I am bearing in mind that it is only a 3* hotel and therefore my expectation is tempered to that level of quality that I expect to find.

We booked our holiday direct at the last minute and specifically wanted to be on the East Coast of Belle Mare. We arrived at the hotel in the early hours of the morning and checked in and went straight to bed - a plate of cold meats and bread were given to us as we had missed dinner, this was a nice thought. (My Daughter also booked a room at the same hotel so we could spend 5 days with her before she had to return to work).

The next morning we were asked to go to reception where we were informed that we were to be transferred to the Grand Baie sister hotel on the west side of the Island at the request of our tour operator!!! What!!!! Our daughter would be at this hotel and us over an hour away...and what tour operator? We booked direct online! We protested and said this was not acceptable and Sheiv; who was very helpful and wanting to help said he would sort it so we could stay at Belle Mare for the duration of our holiday. Thank you Sheiv for looking after us and sorting this out.

Now for the hotel, this hotel is in a beautiful location and could easily be a quality boutique hotel, but sadly the owners and management are not willing to invest to even keep the standards at 3*, we spoke to the manager John Marie and he said they were full all year with tourists in the summer and locals in the winter so keeping maintenance up was a few minutes between room changes, he did not seem at all bothered that there were issues with our room.

The Pool looks lovely although there are some cracked stones and filler that shows it needs renovation. The bar by the pool is quite small and manned from 11 in the morning, Dan one of the bar men there was very attentive and really wanted to make sure the guests had a good time and even created a cocktail that he named after my daughter. Thank you Dan for looking after us! However we did not order from the guy nicknamed Elvis after my husband saw him go to the toilet and not wash his hands afterwards EWE!

The restaurant, there are two restaurants, one is buffet (for those on all inclusive) and one" al a carte", luckily we went B&B so had choice to eat else where.

Breakfast was VERY GOOD each morning there were a selection of juices, fresh fruit, bread, pancakes, waffles, hot sausage, bacon, beans, tomatoes and other offerings with the option for fresh cooked eggs, omelettes etc., there were also pastries and cold meats and cheeses. Raaj one of the head waiters there was extremely friendly and was keen to ensure that we had a nice table and everything was to our liking - thank you Raaj.

We were not overly impressed with the selection on the buffet menu and the cost was not justified so we ate al a carte, however on the first night we had steak, there was no steak knives and the meat was overcooked; asked for (medium rare) got cremated and it was so fatty there was hardly any edible meat on the plate, my husband had the fish and he said this was nice. Sadly the quality of the al a carte food was not up to standard and having eaten there several nights to give them a chance to impress we could not recommend it. We met a Scottish couple that said the buffet was terrible too and that the hot food was always cold (they were all inclusive and went out with us to eat to get a decent meal one night). Another rather annoying issue with the al a carte is that you have to book a day in advance and select your meal when you book, frustrating as you may not know what you want to eat until you sit down that evening! Special thanks to Jerry and Estelle in the restaurant for trying to make everything work.

Afternoon tea, every afternoon there are pancakes (this is a treat- try the pureed banana and chocolate with a sprinkle of coconut - very nice although I recommend going at 4.45 as the burners have warmed through the pancakes then and they are warm rather than cold).

My advice for a decent dinner is go next door to the Luxe hotel food is double the price but much nicer!

Our Room...We had a lovely sea view and were on the ground floor (715), but it lacked cleanliness and required a good dose of maintenance to bring up to scratch. We always remove outdoor footwear at the door and I took slipper socks for around the room, after one day they were so filthy from the floor it was obvious it was not cleaned well. The bathroom had a permanent big drip/leak from the ceiling and so every time you stood at the sink to wash your hands or clean your teeth the water dripped on you, it didn't look too clean either! We asked for maintenance to fix this twice but to no avail. We then had extra floor towels to mop up the leak through our stay. The shower head was mouldy and the corners of the shower area were filthy. The sink tap also was partially coming away from the sink. Overall it was in a very sorry state and needs complete refurbishment. Our towel allocation during our stay was a bit hit and miss, somedays we would have 2 others 1 and then none at all so we had on several occasions had to ask for towels from housekeeping. The beach towel system however worked really well. Our bedding was not changed once during our 11 day stay, which was not great ( we were able to tell this from the black and orange stains that were on the sheet from day one).

The Spa, do take up the offer of the spa treatments, they are really attentive and give great massages.

The entertainment is excellent and Oliver does a great job rallying the guests, we took a bike ride with him to Facq market and had a great time (it is a bit further and there are a few hills - compared to Olivers young description of the ride - so make sure you are fit enough!!). We also took out a Kayak from the boat house and played a little table tennis which was great fun!

Internet, well if you plan to use this whist away I suggest you find alternative source from the hotel, there is no internet in the rooms and the service from reception to the beach is so poor that it is impossible to use, over half an hour to load up a page is not acceptable. The manager admitted they needed to buy more bandwidth but they have done nothing about this even though they are aware of the problem.

One other shock to us was the tipping, they have a tip box at reception that gets shared out each February so if staff leave during the year they don't get your tip! One staff member also said they don't get all of the tips, so we chose to tip directly to the staff that we felt were the best thing this hotel has to offer!

We have travelled extensively around the world and are not worried by the few bugs/ants etc that you find in subtropical climates - it is to be accepted...so have no issues that other guests have mentioned this way.

My overall opinion of this hotel is that it is a shame that it is not looked after as well as it could be, it has the potential to be a great boutique hotel in a great location, if only the management would invest in it wisely! I would not recommend this hotel to any friends and family in it's current state but would come back if they upgraded the hotel and food!

Room Tip: There are stairs down to the beach area and some of the rooms so it is not suitable for wheelchair access

Firstly our apologies for not posting this review sooner, but once back home we’ve been extremely busy and wanted to ensure that we had enough time to post a detailed and honest review that reflected the amazing holiday we had in April this year. We decided to get married in Mauritius and deliberately chose a small hotel that didn’t offer wedding packages as standard, and Veranda Palmar fitted the bill perfectly – it was everything we had hoped for and more. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, we were treated to wonderful 5***** service and we really feel that our holiday was all the more special because of that. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly – nothing was too much trouble and we would like to thank all the staff for their kindness during our visit. Special mention must go to Elvis, Boudhan, Nisha, Suren, Ravi and Shiv who we got to know particularly well and who we thought exemplified the spirit of Mauritius.

The wedding planner Veronique could not have been more helpful and she certainly made our day every bit as special as we were hoping it would be, even though we had planned our marriage ceremony to be low key and understated. She met with us shortly after we arrived and explained everything carefully so we knew what would be happening when. As we didn’t book this through the agent but organized all the formalities ourselves, we only added on and paid for what we really wanted but the hotel went out of their way to make it even more lovely for us and we were showered with good wishes from everyone. We chose to be married in the garden under the palm trees rather than on the beach, as not only would it would have been too hot, but we would have been surrounded by sunbathers and it would have felt way too public and impersonal. We were delighted with how everything was set up – even down to the beautiful shell filled with sand and frangipane flowers which our rings were resting on. The chef had made us an amazing wedding cake and we were treated to a special meal that evening by the side of the pool.

Our room was in the garden and we would certainly recommend asking for this rather than nearer the restaurant where it could be far noisier at times due to the evening entertainment. It was clean, spacious and had all that we needed for our stay, plus we had the added bonus of our towels being folded in to a wonderful array of different animals on a daily basis – the turtle was our favourite! The restaurant served great food with an authentic flavor and the nightly variety was always interesting. Breakfast was particularly good value and kept us going for pretty much the rest of the day, especially the omelettes. Pancakes and afternoon treats are served daily from 3pm as an extra treat! Cold bottles of still and sparkling water were always available and this was particularly useful on the beach once the bar opened at 11am. There were plenty of loungers on the sand under shady umbrellas and free beach towels could be exchanged daily which was really helpful. The pool is relatively small but just right for a leisurely swim as and when you can be bothered. The kitchen will provide a basic pack lunch on request via Reception with 24 hours notice and this was really useful on several occasions.

If you’re after a high octane holiday with lots of people, noise, additional facilities and activities, then Veranda Palmar is not the hotel for you – if you’re simply looking to relax, feel pampered and enjoy a luxury couple of weeks in paradise then you should book with confidence as you won’t be disappointed.

Room Tip: Garden rooms are quieter than pool/bar side
