Recent stay in this wonderful hotel for 10 nights on full board basis.

Arrival: Unfortunately our first impressions of this lovely hotel and stunning entrance hall were dampened (literally) by the fact it was raining heavily on our first day in Mauritius. Nevertheless, we were instantly reassured and put at ease by the friendly and attentive staff on reception. We were sat down on some comfortable sofas and given a refreshing welcome drink whilst getting ourselves checked in. There was a beautiful scent of Ylang-Ylang floating through the entrance hall and it really added to the luxury atmosphere.

Room: We had a garden view room with a balcony but were pleasantly surprised to discover that we also had a good view of the ocean at the same time. The room itself was beautiful with a classy, colonial style to it. It had all the necessary amenities and lots of information readily available about the hotel and it's services. The bathroom was particularly nice with a separate shower and bath tub. There was also a walk-in wardrobe situated within the bathroom which was a nice touch. We were assigned our own butler who came to the room and showed us everything we needed to know. The bed was very comfortable and the TV was a decent size. We also had a pleasant seating area with a sofa, armchair and coffee table.

Cleanliness: The hotel was spotless and the attention to detail was immaculate. Even the communal toilets were impeccably clean with essential oils burning and fresh flannels to dry your hands with.

Food at the 'Dining Room': Breakfast was an all you could eat buffet with a delectable selection of various foods including fresh made to order omelettes and waffles. There was also a selection of fruits which could be made into smoothies should you wish to do so. We never actually ate lunch from the dining room during our entire stay (because we ate at the 'Plantation' - more on that later) so we cannot comment on this. Dinner at the dining room was an all you could eat buffet with differing theme nights including Indian, Asian, Mauritian, Latin etc. Food was generally of a high standard with a good selection but at times it was a bit on the lukewarm side. We also found that the 'strict dress code' wasn't really enforced but we still made an effort and dressed up smartly anyway, as the ambience of the dining room at dinnertime was sophisticated.

The Plantation: Quite possibly one of my favourite things about the hotel was the Plantation restaurant which was situated a short walk from the main building of the hotel on the beach. As I mentioned above, our first day was raining, and we couldn't quite believe we had to use an umbrella on our tropical paradise island holiday to run through the rain to get some lunch. However, on arrival to the Plantation we were cheered up no end as the staff were absolutely lovely and we were looked after impeccably. We ended up eating lunch at the Plantation every single day because it was just amazing and we loved it (excluding two days we were out on excursions). The hotel wasn't overly busy when we were there which meant that sometimes we were the only guests having lunch. This made it feel like we were truly spoilt and had first class service especially for us. We were given credit of 1200Rs at lunchtime and 1600Rs at dinner time as part of the full board deal. The allowance was just about enough for 2 courses. For 3 courses you would almost certainly need to supplement extra payment. A nice touch was the selection of complimentary breads to have alongside your meal which the staff were always offering frequently. I was a bit partial to the cheese bread! The quality of the food was fabulous and it was always presented beautifully giving it that special edge. My personal favourite dishes were the chicken burger, chicken tagliatelle and spagetti bolognese at lunch time. At dinner time I would recommend the prawn tagliatelle and the veal chop. The chocolate fondant dessert was also a moreish and naughty treat I had a bit too much of if my waistband is anything to go by since returning home! The restaurant is open plan with stunning beach views and has such a welcoming and relaxing feel to it. The staff at the Plantation were in our opinion outstanding and wonderful.

Staff: As touched upon in the previous paragraph, the staff at the Plantation were absolutely brilliant. In particular, Girish was our favourite waiter (and overall staff member of the entire hotel). He had a very endearing air about him. He always greeted us with unfaltering politeness and with a genuine, caring and kind manner. It soon became the highlight of our day coming for a lovely lunch and having wonderful service from Girish. Other staff mentions would have to include the lovely, smiling Angelie at the Plantation. Angelie would always remember our names, room number and drinks orders! Maybe that's because we were a bit predictable but hey! I remember having dinner on one of our last nights and the wind picking up making me a bit cold. Almost immediately (and without me having to ask) Tanveer came running over to me with a pashmina to wear over my shoulders. It's the little things like that that really make you feel like the staff care about you and want to look after you. Other staff members from the Plantation such as Anoushka and Akesh were extremely lovely. It has to be said that throughout the hotel you are met with warm and friendly faces. The staff obviously have very good training and cannot do enough for you.

Drinks: Unfortunately, one of the downsides of our stay was the price of the drinks. The drinks were almost double what you would expect to pay in the UK for a simple glass of wine or beer. We almost felt we had to limit ourselves and savour 1 or 2 alcoholic drinks per night max in fear of what the bill would be upon checking out. I suppose they have to make their money somewhere but it did feel slightly lacking in terms of value for money in this area.

Weather: I had read a few reports that although Mauritius is a lovely place to visit all year round, it could be a bit windy on the east coast during September. I would say that it was a bit windy, but definately not enough to spoil our stay. If anything it was more like a fresh sea breeze. One thing I would say is not to read too much into the weather forecasts until the actual day of which you are looking at as the weather really does change quite frequently. Our entire holiday was forecast for rain but actually it only really rained 2 days out of 10. The rest of the holiday was stunning sunshine with scattered clouds. At times the clouds would occlude the direct sunshine but the wind would soon blow the clouds over and it would be sunny again. I would say we were actually pleasantly surprised about the weather. It was beautifully warm sunbathing weather when the sun was out, and when the sun did go in it was actually a nice relief from the sun for a little bit.

Beach: The hotel is situated on the beach and I have to say it was a very impressive and stunning stretch of beach. It really does have that paradise feeling to it. The island is surrounded by coral reef which leaves a calm and serene lagoon gently caressing the sands. The water was crystal clear and created a majestic turquoise hue. Truly picture perfect. There are a few beach touts offering pashminas, bracelets, watersports etc but they were polite and will happily leave you alone if you're not interested (unlike some tourist destinations in Europe). Another really nice thing about the hotel was that there was an abundance of sunbeds available around the pool and on the beach. Now this might be a different story when the hotel is at full capacity but we certainly had no trouble obtaining a sunbed anywhere we wanted. It was just so nice walking up to a spot of your choice, having a member of staff lay a fresh towel down for you and bring you a complimentary bottle of chilled water. There are a number of watersports available such a paragliding, speedboating, paddle boarding etc. We didn't partake in this as we were feeling a bit lazy but one thing we did experience was the complimentary glass bottom boat trip. This took us around the lagoon and you get to see the tropical fish swimming beneath you which we really enjoyed.

Entertainment: So if you're looking for party, party, party, this probably isn't the best place for you. However, if you're looking for something more refined and relaxing with a glass of wine in a comfortable chair, and listening to some live bands playing a variety of chillout songs then this is ideal. It's nice to be able to enjoy some good music whilst still being able to have a conversation.

Overall, we absolutely loved our stay at the Residence and would absolutely recommend it. It is a beautiful hotel with everything you could want. It is an ideal relaxing getaway for couples in a dreamy location. We miss it a lot!

We have just returned from a week at the Residence.

We had a garden view room, on half board basis. Our thoughts mirror many of the reviews of the hotel, in that the quality of the setting and the hotel itself are amazing. The rooms are very generous, with large bedroom/living area. The bathroom is huge in comparison to many other hotels, with a separate walk in wardrobe, which allows you to store your clothes and cases to avoid clutter elsewhere.

We mainly used the buffet, which has a different theme each night, and there are plenty of options to cater for most tastes. Could have done with a few more vegetables though, as the trousers are definitely tighter now then when I left the UK :). On our final night we ate in the Plantation restaurant, which has a lovely view over the beach and out to sea. The food was better quality than the buffet. After the meal we were given a birthday cake and card, as it was my partner's birthday. A nice touch, as we didn't tell them beforehand, so they obviously check the DOBs on the booking.

Overall we were very impressed with the hotel and if we returned to Mauritius we would definitely return to this hotel.

Finally, the one thing that really makes the stay so relaxing and welcoming, is the friendliness of the staff. Wherever you go and whatever your request, you are always greeted with a smile. The staff really are excellent and deserve a special mention.

As stated by other reviewers, the only negative is the price of the drinks, which is definitely on the high side! I assume that all of the larger hotels charge a similar amount however, so don't let that stop you.

Only the whole, the holiday was fantastic.

We really enjoyed it. Sam said she liked lots of things about the stay but especially the beach and the pool. Both restaurants at the hotel were good as well. Nice time. Thank you very much. Cocktails and bar as well.

Stayed here for 7 nights in a garden view room on half board basis. First impressions are that grounds are stunning, immaculately clean throughout, 3 large pools linked together on a stunning part of Belle Mare beach. The beach whilst not private as no beaches are but it sits along an impressive stretch with hardly anyone to disturb you.

This hotel is perfect if you want a quiet and tranquil setting, the opposite of noisy and party atmosphere. Rooms are very spacious compared to averge room with 55 square metres, a small walk in wardrobe, mini bar, shower cubicle and large bath, along with Sat tv with Canal Plus and all the football sports. The hotel reception tried to give impression it was 90% full (looking for a better room) but in fact was barely 50% full. This was a plus as no fighting for sun beds which were plentiful and most of the time the pool and beach were to yourself. Being on the East side there is always a gentle breeze. Free watersports and made use of glass bottom boat which is a must,

The food was excellent, we mainly ate at the buffet and they always had a live cooking station for different dishes varying each night, Chinese, Italian, Mauritian etc. My only criticism is that there is a charge for water at 180 rupees per litre bottle however this is offset by the fact they provide you with 2 complimentary bottles per day in room plus on request at the pool/beach for no extra charge. We ate once at the a la carte Plantation restuarant where you receive a 1,600 rupee credit which is enough for 2 courses, may have to add a bit more of your own cash if you want 3 courses. Service and food here was amazing,

Evening entertainment is on a small scale, they alternate each night between small dance groups and live band/singers. We preferred the shows which was good light entertainment.

The kids club had very friendly staff and you could trust them to look after yuur child. They take the kids to the pool, organise games, movie, henna tattoos, etc It is small but enough to keep little one's busy with traditional games (no games consoles, a good thing!).

My only criticism is the prices of drinks and food outside the package, even allowing for taxes it was extortionate, a small Phoenix beer for 240 rupees when you can get a pack of 6 cans at local supermarket for about the same price. Wine over 1000 rupees a bottle and counting, plus average kids meal 450 rupees and adult meal 800 rupees. So we mainly went light at lunch time after a full breakfast. Once you step outside of the hotel you will find restaurants and alcohol very cheap locally.

Made use of the spa which is first class, top faciliies too. Overall the staff make this place really special, the butler service, ours Ritesh was excellent, The Guest service manager, restaurant staff, Sam and Shishta were excellent. All the staff greet you and make sure you are happy with everything.

I rarely go back to same place as there are so many new places to discover but could stay here again. Highly recommended for peace and relaxation!

We stayed here for our honeymoon and there isn’t a single thing that I can fault.

The welcome was so warm! Staff here are incredibly friendly and will go to all ends to please. This ranges from the butlers, cleaners, reception, restaurant/bar and SPA/pool/beach staff.

Our stay was beyond what we wanted - cannot recommend The Residence enough.

During your stay, put aside a day or two to have dinner at The Plantation restaurant - food was divine! The buffet @ the main restaurant is varied with lots of delicious cuisines served daily - we were fortunate to have had a Mauritian cuisine day!

This is not the last visit - will definitely be back.

Thank you to all The Residence team - you are fantastic!
