We had a great adventure with Burger, a wonderfully funny, interesting, knowledgable, and patient guide. We will never forget this experience! Initially I was hesitant, we were 4 adults and two very young children (ages 3 and 2) but we took the chance and it was worth it. He met us at our hotel, chatted as we drove down the road to Walvis Bay and then took us on quite a ride to Sandwich Harbour. He stopped to show us the beautiful views, special sights, and finally walked us a bit around the harbour, carried the 3yr old up a dune, and then spread out the yummiest picnic- fresh salad, homemade pasta dish, and the best apple crumble. On the ride home we drove over some dunes, he gave us just the right thrill!

Highly recommend Turnstone Tours, couldn't have asked for more.

We loved our tour through the dunes to Sandwich Harbor. By far our favorite day trip from Swakop. Not only was the scenery breathtaking, but our guide Burger is the best! He prepared a fantastic lunch on a secluded beach. And made the dune driving very exciting. I especially loved that he taught us how to make the sand sing by sliding down it. Take the time for the day trip - much more enjoyable than the short half day.

We enjoyed a really great day out with Turnstone Tours, recommended to us by Audley Travel. We were picked up on time in the well used Landrover by Burga, our driver and guide. There was just one other couple with us. We drove from Swakopmund to Walvis Bay, seeing the birding sites on the way. Passing the interesting salt works we then drove along the beach and through the sand-dunes towards Sandwich Harbour, driving through the dry Quasi river bed through reeds which retain life as their roots are deep into the water table. It has rained in this area for over 3 years! We drove through lots of small hillocky dunes, seeing the rare Dune Lark, the only bird endemic in Namibia, a jackal, springbok before finding ourselves back on the beach, passing a seal skeleton and picking up a petrified oyster each only 50 million years old! We passed some much higher dunes and had an optional climb to the top. Later on we came across the top of a wooden gable and a few ruined wooden staves in the sand. Until the 1950s, this was a whaling station but, 60 years later, it has been completely covered up by sand. An extraordinary sight. It turns out that Sandwich Harbour is not a harbour at all but just a long stretch of sand besides the crashing waves.

A picnic lunch emerged from the back of the land rover - salad, pate, tuna, and bread and apples. We had no idea what was coming next but it turned to be a fntastic dune drive - speeding up huge dunes to hover at the top and drive down the other side. It was just like a roller coaster on wheels! Six ostriches seemed a bit amazed when they saw us, particularly when we got temporarily stuck half way up a particularly soft hill! Burga showed us the Narrer plant which is part of the cucumber family and produces amazingly large fruit, gourd sized, in this arid desert. Not surprisingly, this plant is very popular with all the residents of the sand world! It is watered mostly by the fog which rolls in from the sea most mornings.

Reluctantly we left our new playground and returned to the beach to return home, via the sight of a newly arrived dead baby humpback whale, which was still fairly large! A much larger dead adult whale was a little way long the beach but we didn’t go too near because of the terrible smell. It obviously been huge. A black backed jackal was fairly near, obviously hoping to scavenge, and unusually stayed long enough to be photographed. On the rest of the journey, we saw lots more flamingos, cape teal, sandpipers, pelicans and even a camel! A tiring but great day out to be highly recommended!

We enjoyed the most incredible full-day tour of Sandwich Harbour with Bruno and Schteimie (spelled?). Bruno, the owner of the company, is one of the most interesting people you will ever meet. Any topic of conversation that comes up you will find such a wealth of knowledge and interesting view points. He is an admirable conservationist and a professional photographer. Schteimie, who is a potential/apprentice tour guide, was so much fun to spend the day with and also very knowledgeable. We appreciated what a fun, adventurous day this was and how personable and intelligent our guides were. The picnic lunch on the beach was lovely and, despite our car trouble (and maybe even because of it!), this is one of my favorite memories from our trip. We saw lots of great white pelicans and flamingos and enjoyed our long walk at Sandwich Harbour. The tour offered many great opportunities for photographers. Thank you for an absolutely amazing day!

We did the full-day tour out of Swakopmund, with Bruno and Burger. What a day! Driving on the beach, trapped on one side by the waves, and the other by the dunes. Burger's expert driving was a marvel to watch. We drove over the dunes - wow! We had a simple and lovely home cooked meal on the beach, complete with tablecloths and serviettes, seats and crockery. The boys pointed out so much flora and fauna that it was amazing. Loved every minute of it. Bruno was a little terse, and in fact rude to some other drivers, which is why I gave this 4 stars instead of 5, but Burger was a kind, entertaining and skilful guide.
