Owner description: One of the last built and most elegant of the Hudson River lighthouses.

I'm not sure if they do this only in December, but it was so much fun to see the lighthouse lit up at night. It's a shock to people like me from Michigan, to see a lighthouse in a river and not on a Great Lake. Really worth driving down to see it, on the Athens side.

Better viewed from (hilltop) Washington Street on the Athens side of River so save your $1.50 toll crossing Rip Van Winkle Bridge

Enjoy a beautiful short boat ride to the lighthouse - tour the lighthouse -- and travel back to Hudson or Athens. Well worth the time. Relaxing trip back in time.

We made a point to visit when there was a tour since the lighthouse is really out there in the river. It's difficult to get nice photos, too. With the tour, you get a ride on the little ferry skiff, a history, time to explore the building on your own and a video with the interview of a former resident. Well worth the $24 each. We got great photos as the skiff approached the lighthouse.

We live in Athens, and know a lady who grew up living in the lighthouse. We were able to get access for a photo shoot with the Hudson River Bells, our local hand-bell choir. It is situated smack dab in the middle of the Hudson River, so we needed to be shuttled out. We found being on the island very interesting. There are only certain times tours are available. If you go out on your own boat, the sheriff will chase you away.
