Returned again to this hostel , it gets better each year. The rooms are all being improved & decorated & as ever were clean. The kitchen room has basic facilities but more than enough for a city with so much to offer in the way of eating out. A new supermarket opened within a few hundred metres makes shopping easy for non Russian speakers .
The staff here as ever are one of the place's greatest assets friendly , able to answer enquiries in English if needed or find information if you need it.The ability to register your visa quickly means it's a great place as a stopover on a longer trip.
It's location is great as it is close to two metro stations , not far to Nevsky Prospect & many of St P's attractions but far enough away to be quiet & off the beaten track.
The hostel has a great feeling of safety with a concierge arrangement on the ground floor lift up to the floors that the hostel occupies.
Look forward to going back next year.

Room Tip: Quieter rooms away from the kitchen room . The area is quiet as are all the rooms dependent only on...

This hostel is undeniably basic, but they are trying hard. All the really important things for travellers are there. The security is superb: the only time the woman at the entrance hall missed giving us the once-over as we passed her cubbyhole at street level, she was out of her room to check us out before we were halfway up the first flight of stairs! Dorm rooms have lockable wardrobes, the room area needs a key both to enter and to exit, and the reception is always there and alert. The staff are incredibly helpful - and very friendly to boot. I left a coat on the bus which necessitated numerous calls to the bus station before the bus company would confirm it was there, and they called and re-called on my behalf, without a breath of annoyance, until they got a result. Then we had a bag stolen in the street that contained our bus tickets and again they were really helpful in finding a way for us to reprint them. After we left Russia the bag mysteriously reappeared at the bus station and the Hostel contacted us back at home with this news and arranged to send it on. The Ritz could not improve on this level of customer service!

The place itself is well located within the city, away from the main tourist area but within easy walking distance of Nevsky Prospect and the sights. There is a brilliant patisserie/baker cafe 2 blocks down the road that the hostel is on, in the direction that is away from the main road, if you prefer a deluxe breakfast. On the opposite corner from the cafe is a splendid delicatessen so you have no need to go to a restaurant for topnotch food. There is a usable fridge, lots and lots of really hot water in the showers, several places to sit outside one's room, and a cheerfully bizarre approach to interior decor manifest in the murals painted on the room walls. The beds are comfortable and the bedlinen clean if old. Take your own towel since the one provided is pretty minimal. Try the ancient lift if you enjoy a thrill!

I very much enjoyed staying here. It reminded me of youthful travelling in the 70s. There were several (friendly) people staying here from other places in Russia so you had a more cosmopolitan experience than if you stayed in a smart hotel. For a cheap hostel, I don't believe you could do better. Safety and helpfulness count for more than appearance in a place like this and they really score high on those.

Room Tip: Rooms in the first area are noisier because of people coming and going through the rather loud secur...

This is Russia, which basically means everything costs far more than you think it should. Puppet hostel wasn´t a warm welcoming place, fels like a converted apartment block, but it is safe, secure and clean. They do offer a breakfast which isn´t really up to much. the rooms are very basic, and hile the sheets were clean the floor of the room could do with a good vacuum. It wasn´t cheap but then this is Russia and considering the alternatives wasn´t too bad.
Staff were polite and reasonably helpful. Soe English was spoken - more than enough for booking in etc. We booked in advance, and they wanted payment in advance (visa), all worked smoothly.

This isn´t a great place but there won´t be any horror stories either. expect basic and you´ll be fine.

I was happy with the Puppet Theatre Hostel. It was clean, our room was nice and was cleaned daily (fresh towels and everything). We shared bathrooms, but they were never busy and always had hot water.
Breakfast was included and was a good spread of bread, cheese, sliced meat, yogurt, and cereal.
There was a good mix of travelers staying there - families, solo travelers, people of all ages. It wasn't simply for backpackers.
There are certainly places with better locations, but this location was great - a short walk to the sights.
The staff were helpful and friendly.
I would recommend it.

Why has no-one else reviewed this place?! I stayed here some time ago but just have to put in a review for anyone who might want to stay here.
It's really well located, only a 5 minute walk from the Moscow train station and just off Nevsky Prospekt, the city's main street. There's a net cafe and a little store nearby, which is convenient.
This hostel may have no frills, but I stayed here with a small group of friends and it really felt like we had the place to ourselves. The rooms were basic, but clean, as were the communal bathrooms. The staff are friendly and helpful.
One word of warning though - don't be late for breakfast as you may not get any at all!
Overall good value - foreign students in Russia, use your Russian student card to avail of a lower price ;)
