I was looking for some comfort Indian food after a week in Japan and visited Gautama upon reading the review on trip advisor and wasn't disappointed at all! The food is well prepared, right blend of spices vs. just putting in extra red chillies to make it spicey. The servings are a bit small but the taste makes up for it.

Our hotel was around the corner and we popped in for a lunch set one day. We were there a bit before the lunch crowd and their five tables quickly filled up. We enjoyed sets with naan, two curries, a salad and bit of chicken tikka. The lunch came with a daikon pepper soup that was delicious and a coffee or chai. Overall, it was a good non-Japanese lunch for a reasonable price in the center of Kyoto. We also had samosas for a starter which were good. The service was also quick and friendly.

Its a pity that such a charming restauarant serves such poor food. The price was very high for what we got--a watery chicken curry, small salad, small side of rice, samosa, nan, and a lassi for 1700 yen. Other than the nan, the food was less than delicious. The lassi was particularly bad, and tasted like the yogurt was past its expiration date. The nan, however, was quite good.
Our decision to eat there haunted us for the rest of the day, as every person in the party got sick.
I have eaten at many an Indian food restaurant in Kyoto, and this is the only one I would not return to.
