I normally enjoy aqariums and came with expectations based on visits to the aquariums in Monterey, Copenhagen and most recently in Lisbon.

Firstly the mammals, including the penguins, all were in enclosures that seemed far too small for them, l felt especially sad for Pacific White Sided Dolphins, animals such as these should in my opinion never be kept in captivity (should any?...)

The main tank featuring the Whale Sharks, various rays, sharks and fish was devoid of any features and it felt like looking into a very large uninspired goldfish bowl, the main tank at the Lisbon aquarium shows how a large scale exhibit like this can be done.

A disappointing visit overall and one that left me feeling sorry for the animals on display.

Wheelchair users are well catered for in the Kaiyukan. Upon entry, the staff will take you up the lift to the top floor to look at the Japan Forest. Then they will take you down to the level where you can peruse the biggest tank ever. Most people will crowd around here, but the best spot is actually to keep going down because it is one big tank in the middle that can be viewed on multiple levels. There is a level ground marked wheelchair spots for you to view the tanks comfortably.

Aquarium tickets are sort of pricey. We went in the afternoon and the first few exhibits were super crowded. The further you go, the less crowded it gets. A lot of exhibits have multifloor tanks, so you might be able to see things below too.

You start at the top of the aquarium building and make your way down in a spiral. There's a giant tank in the middle that you walk around. It had whale sharks, big stingrays, and other sharks/fish. It was probably too small of a tank for how big the whale sharks are, but they still had room to swim around.

The seals were really cute, we caught one of their feeding/show times and it was neat to watch them do tricks.

There's also a petting/touching area at the end of the aquarium where you can touch stingrays and sharks carefully.

The aquarium exhibit was great and, while crowded, it was a well organized exhibit and we got to see everything. The location is also fantastic, with great views, other nearby attractions, and an excellent food court next door. Highly recommended.
