“A hotel in the shell of a B&B”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 September 2012

Upon reaching Jalan Nagasari, one will notice the old buildings that are blocked off by the posh hotels from the main street. Little will one know that they will be filled with surprises upon walking up the stair in between an internet shop and closed shop houses.

The B&B is clean and i will consider it almost 'posh' for B&B, clean and carrying a style of zen. Everything was keep simple with basic furnitures for your needs of hanging clothes and put your stuffs, no cupboard.

Staffs were friendly and helpful. I will like to compliment one of them but i did not manage to get hold of his name. A malay guy sporting a very short hair in uniform working at from 8am on 12/09/2012. He was help, cheerful and very pleasant to speak too, making one feel that he is trying to help wholeheartedly.

As a traveller on a shoestring and a backpacker keen on meeting fellow travellers, i do find that the B&B does not provide a setting that allows much mingling around. On saying that, the nest will provide one tired traveller an environment to rest well away from the usual 'party' with other traveller.

The nest is situated within the "golden triangle" of Kuala Lumpur (if i am not wrong). Huge shopping malls are within walking distance yet other attractions like the chinatown will be slightly far to walk but still walk-able.

Location is really not an issue in Kuala Lumper, be it you are staying near little india/chinatown or golden triangle. Monorail and LRT are easy to take (it may amount to quite an amount per day) if not, walking will be a good choice with a good map. In addition, there is a free shuttle bus service, GOKL, now that will be of beneficial.

The nest, i will not really list it under a B&B but more of a budget hotel. It is slightly more expensive compared to other guesthouse but definitely worth it if you are not into interacting and just needed a break.

Dear LittleAlfifi, thank you for your review. We are sure that you want to make us a compliment by describing us as a hotel in the shell of a B&B. But in order to avoid misunderstandings and false expectations, we have to underline that we are only a guesthouse which is striving for excellence in what we are doing - providing budget accommodation in downtown KL. We do not have bunks nor dorms - hence the total number of people who stay with us at any time is smaller than with other guesthouses. This may explain why you did not experience a party of backpackers at our place. Where we beg to differ is whether The Nest provides a setting that encourages mingling or not. In fact, our modern pantry (see our profile picture on Tripadvisor) and our cozy lounge have been popular places to mingle, work and play ever since we have opened our place. All the best from all of us here! Cheers, your Nest Team

I was looking for a cheap hotel for a two night stay in KL when I accidentally saw a link for The Nest. When I read the reviews, I immediately sent an inquiry email for its availability. Luckily, I got one. For a two night stay, I paid RM 318. This was for a twin deluxe room.

The location is okay since it was in the middle of the city. Nearby hotels are Hotel Istana, Radius Hotel and Park Royal Service Suites. If you know these hotels, then you are definitely in the neighborhood. Its on a small side street with lots of open-air restaurants. Its more of a residential area and it looks “seedy” at first but if you look hard enough, you will see that there are a lot of tourists around because of the three hotels I mentioned above. When you arrive at the place or when you go inside the place, you will suddenly feel that you made the right decision because the place is pretty decent. Its like visiting your friend’s cozy home. I paid for the two night stay right away as I was sure of my schedule. The room was located at the third floor.

The room had two single bed and was pretty clean. The bathroom was also clean and had a water heater. However, there was no table or hooks inside the bathroom to hang your clothes. You either have to change in the bedroom or put it on top of the toilet seat. They should have put more hooks there. In the bedroom, there was only one table in-between the two beds. Frankly, there’s still some space for a table and chair(s) which they should have provided because its hard to do any writing without any table. They could also put some more light? It was only there that I realized that there was no TV! I was not bothered about this at first but I realized that without TV, there was just not anything you can do in the room other than sleep. So I don’t think travelers with kids would like this. You can watch TV downstairs in a comfy sofa but we didn’t feel like socializing at that time so we just stayed in our room.

Breakfast was available from 8am to 11am. It was a self-service breakfast. They had two kinds of cereals, coffee, instant choco drink, 2 kinds of milks (low fat and whole milk) and two kinds of bread which you can toast as there was a toaster there. They also provided three kinds of spread plus butter. If you normally have cereals or toast for breakfast, then I guess this is okay. But if you are a heavy breakfast eater, then I suggest you skip this one or just get more breakfast outside. The coffee was great though. It was an instant coffee but I loved it!

On going there: we printed out the instruction from the site regarding going there by monorail. Based on instruction, it says to take the monorail on Tun Sambanthan (the 2nd to the last station). Its a 3 to 5 minutes walk to get to this station. I don’t know why they recommended this station when Sentral station (the last station for the monorail) is much nearer. Both stations are outside the KL Sentral building (where KLIA and buses from airport stops). We went down at Raja Jalan station as instructed but got confused with the map and ended up getting lost for 5 minutes before we found the place. Our lesson: when you go down the stairs from the monorail station, stay on your right. Just stay on the right side of the pavement and you will see ACROSS the street that there’s a white building with different flags. That is Istana hotel. You have to cross the street where you are at. Either you can use the pedestrian lane on the left side corner (while facing the hotel) or cross the street directly while traffic is on stop (I saw some locals doing it). But the important thing is to cross that street. When you are already on the same side of Istana hotel, facing the hotel, go to the right side corner. That street is Jalan Angsoka. Turn left. It’s a downhill street. Just walk right down that street and you will see restaurants on your left side after Istana Hotel. If you see Park Royal Service Suites building on your left, then you are on the right direction. On the third street is Jalan Nagasari Curry house. Turn left. The Nest is found around 6 doors on your left, before you reach the corner. The small gate is in between a karaoke place (which was pretty quite despite being a karaoke shop) and 24-hours internet shop. You just have to press the doorbell and the gate/door will automatically open.

If you are like us and crossed the street but turned left instead of right, you will reach the HSBC building. You can either go back as you are already on the pavement where Istana hotel is and follow the instruction above or on the site or stay where you are and turn right on the side street after HSBC. The street is slightly uphill and curves. When you reach the corner, turn right and you will go down and you will see Jalan Nagasari Curry House on your right side. Turn right and The Nest will be on your left, the small gate/door before the 24-hour internet shop.

PROS: good location, decent and pretty rooms. Serves its purpose. Good price. Very good WIFI signal.

CONS: no frills so that means no hair dryer (for women) , no toiletries, no TV or radio in your room, no mini-bar or coffee, no iron or extra hangers (and closet) for your clothes.

Would I recommend this place? YES for backpackers, budget travelers, and solo travellers who will be spending 90% of their time outside. For family, I would hesitate because kids would get restless since there’s no TV or pool or play area to distract them. Plus, you have to wash your own dishes so its no vacation for adults with kids.

Dear Jen18_10, thank you for your comprehensive review which is much appreciated. The Nest offers budget accommodation in downtown KL at VERY affordable rates. In order to be able to do so, we have to keep things simple. The soap dispensers in all bathrooms contain organic aromatherapy shower gel (Esprit d'Orange by Kyren). Other amenities such as aromatherapy body lotion and shampoo are available at the reception for a very cheap price. This is also where everybody can borrow hair dryers or an iron. With these amenities and the daily change of towels in all guest rooms we want to contribute to the comfort of our guests. Bigger rooms will soon feature writing desks and safe boxes to further enhance the feel-good experience at our place. Cheers, your Nest Team :-)

originally i booked for a budget double room and a family room, since we are 6 people travelling from SG. but a week before, 1 of us decided not to pursue the trip. I contacted the Nest and they were very accomodating and helpful. They cancelled the budget double room upon my request and booked 5 of us for a family room. :D The room was clean and the bed was cozy. The staff was very helpful and informative in provinding directions. I really appreciated it.

Would i recommend it? Definitely yes! we got what we paid for.
Suggestion though, a microwave in the kitchen would definitely be a plus and free drinking water. :) But other than those mentioned, THE NEST was excellent. i wanted to bring Kaya back here in the Philippines. :D

Dear sashikatkat, thank you for sharing your thoughts here on Tripadvisor. Thanks also for your suggestions! Actually, the water in the pantry is filtered and has drinking water quality - maybe we should make this better known to our guests?! We are glad to hear that you like our Kaya - next time please tell us, we certainly can organize a bottle or two for you. Cheers and all the best from all of us here at The Nest! :-)

Dear phukettropicalinn, thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are sorry to hear that your room did not meet your expectations. In order to avoid disappointments, we always recommend our guests to visit our website and to check the pictures and other info provided there. What you see is what you get (we don't lie) - clean, friendly rooms with simple furniture (bedside tables, wall rack, luggage table in bigger rooms). Soon all bigger rooms will also feature writing desks and safe boxes. Our place is a guesthouse, we do not have the standard of a hotel (e.g. the TV in rooms that you mention). As we are travelers ourselves, we know of course that accommodation in Thailand tends to be cheaper than e.g. Kuala Lumpur. Having said this we believe that a direct comparison between hotel prices in different countries is always a little problematic. We hope this explanation helps. Kind regards!

I stayed in the Nest for 3 nights and then returned for a further 2 before leaving KL. The rooms were very clean, very comfortable and good value for those on a mid range budget. I slept like a log! There is a small tv/ internet area and kitchen.

The staff were really friendly and helpful, offering a number of suggestions and maps!

I would thoroughly recommend this guesthouse to anyone and will most definitely be staying here again if and when I return to KL.
