Owner description: Large open-plan museum on four levels with an impressive collection of Islamic artifacts. The wood carvings are a consistent favorite.

Very nice selection of ancient tapestries & fabrics focusing on the involvement & expertise of Islamic craftsmen in fine fabrics, as well as an interesting display of miniature buildings (mosques) around the world. I was disappointed there was no mention of the prayer rug-as it is probably the most known contribution to western interior decorating that there is. Also, the Blue Mosque is not an Islamic design, but rather a Roman contribution as it was designed much like the San Sophia that sits across from it in Istanbul and is one of the oldest and early Christian -Byzantine churches (now used as a mosque) The credit should be attributed to the Romans who designed the arch and who's architecture was used in the first Basilicas.

The Islamic Arts Museum (IAMM) is one of the best museums in Malaysia with over 7000 top quality artefacts from all over the Islamic world.

Opened in 1998, the museum has 30,000 sq.m. of exhibition space and is located in a quiet corner of Kuala Lumpur next to the scenic Lake Gardens.

Apart from exhibits from the Middle East, the museum focuses on Asian Islamic arts, particularly those from China, India and the Malay world.

I loved the scale models of mosques from around the world in particular; they had a very diverse set from Africa to Arabia to China. I find Islamic arts especially fascinating with the beautiful calligraphy and patterns, and this museum did a wonderful job showcasing that. It was not just focused on traditional Middle Eastern Islam, but from all over the world in the wide array of cultures. The museum still looks brand new and is gorgeous inside.
