Owner description: The Apothecary served local customers, including the Washingtons and Robert E. Lee, between 1792 and 1933. The shop was transformed into a museum shortly after its closing and visitors can still view the original ingredients, products, and documents left behind by this 141-year-old family business.

I visited with my 8 year old daughter and we both really enjoyed it! It’s incredible to see the apothecary with all of its original contents and learn about the history. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and eager to answer any questions on the tour. We visited during a special “Mad Scientist” weekend and my daughter got to make and take home her own putty and do a couple little experiments with the Mad Scientist. We visited while staying in Alexandria, but it’s super easy to get to the apothecary from the metro station, so it would be a good place to visit if you’re in the DC area!

This place was so cool. It is exactly as it was when it was closed 75 years ago which is so amazing. A must see as far as I’m concerned

The contents were saved at auction and it's mostly unchanged since the shop closed. Cool little shop. Get a "Key to the City" from the visitors center and it covers many local sites.

It was a throwback to a more dangerous time when the likes of "Dragon's Blood" was an ingredient in the so-called medicine that was sold. The visit made me even more greatful for the FDA!

This is definitely an interesting visit if you are in the Alexandria area. The tour is pretty short, it is 30 minutes. If you have AAA you can get a discount. The gift shop is really neat and has a lot of quirky gifts.
