We stayed here for 1 night as we stayed in Praia do forte the other nights.

The hotel is very central - in the middle of the 3 main churches and round the corner from the lift to the mercado modelo.
Staff is very friendly and the food is quite nice. Breakfast is table service not buffet so if you're a light eater or don't like something just let them know. We wanted to try dinner there but it was full so if you want to dine there book with reception.

They also have a little pool overlooking the city where you can sunbathe and have a drink and snacks. We were the only 2 there so it was really nice, however if you want somewhere where you can stay by the pool all the time this might not be the place (pool measure around 8m x 2m).

Our two night stay in Salvador was greatly enhanced by our stay here! From the minute we arrived we were given a very warm, genuine and informative welcome by one of the French owners and in truth it was his passion and hospitality that makes this an ideal stay while in Salvador. The room was clean, had a view of the harbour and a great bathroom with jacuzzi bath/shower. On our second night we had a meal at the hotel and it was genuinely one of our best in Brazil. The hotel has a small pool and terrace as well as a top floor terrace with bar. The hotel is situated in the heart of the old historic part of Salvador, but was surprisingly quiet for this light sleeper. Breakfasts were plentiful and served all at once which was a bit overbearing and in truth too much but the quality was not lacking. During our stay we went to see a football match involving the local team and two of the hotels staff who were going anyway, accompanied us and took us under their wing for the night. Finally after we'd left and realised we'd left some washing, on our return from Morro 4 days later, a member of staff met us off the catamaran with it. The owners of this hotel work very hard to provide you with a memorable stay, in this comfortable and ideally situated hotel.

Room Tip: Room facing the sea was very quiet.

Having spent many months all over Brazil from humble pousadas, friends' homes in local areas to luxury accommodation, Casa do Amarelindo was one of my three favourite stays. I originally booked for a few days and extended my stay for well over a week because I fell in love with Salvador. Amarelindo had everything to do with that.

The hotel is perfectly located in Pelourinho. Some of the other highly recommended accommodation is a five or so minute wander into the thick of it and the reality is, this isn't great of a night. Amarelindo is on an active pedestrian street in the middle of anything worth seeing in Pelourinho. As for safety, my time spent in Pelourinho is what gave me confidence in solo travel. There are definitely a few streets that you'd best avoid of a night but there's so much activity during the day that truly, it's fine. Be as alert and sensible as you'd be anywhere in Brazil. But if you are worried, Amarelindo is a smart place to stay.

The rooms are fantastic. Oversized, beautiful beds. Superb views of either the raw Baiano architecture, ocean and pool or your own courtyard. I stayed in two different rooms and preferred the one with a view versus the courtyard.

There is a celebration of Baiano culture throughout the hotel. Carved images of orixas etc but this is chic rather than tokenistic.

What placed this hotel above so many others (and I stayed at Villa Bahia and Pestana Convento do Carmo as well), was the staff. Marcos, Paolo and Ricardo were all the best reception / concierge staff I've come across. Marcos in particular was articulate, honest, helpful (even booking other accommodation for me when Amarelindo was booked out), and made sure I was safe getting from A to B (I was a lone female traveller). It was truly emotional having to say goodbye to what felt like new family.

HITS:

Boutique, not run of the mill.
Local but chic vibe.
Fantastic caipirinhas at the hotel bar.
Sensational views.
PERFECT location.
Large, comfortable rooms.
Professional, kind, honest staff.
Friendly atmosphere.
Great little pool. So many hotels / pousadas in Pelourinho don't have a pool and you really need one in the heat.

MISSES:

The plumbing. Slightly haphazard but that's the way it is everywhere in Brazil. Not the fault of the hotel.

The gym. It's dinky. But at least they have a gym.

Best tip: Be sure to stay on a Tuesday night or during one of the religious festivals. Pelourinho comes alive with percussion, celebration, culture and good energy. And all at the door of the hotel.

My memories of Amarelindo will last a lifetime. Can't wait to return.

NOTE: I travelled in 2012, not April 2014. I couldn't select an earlier date to upload the review.

Room Tip: Request a balcony room overlooking the ocean / pool.

We travelled with our 3 adult children. The hotel is situated right in the centre of the historic area and the whole are was decorated for Carnival it was very exciting. The hotel is not a luxury hotel but its location makes up for what it may miss in comfort. On saying that our rooms both with balconies and port views were clean, comfortable and very attractively decorated. Great comfortable bed etc. The bath was a little old but seemed to do the trick! We had our complimentary drink on the rooftop watching the sun go down and definitely had more than one or two drinks there very happily.. we decided both nights to visit the rooftop bar it was so nice!!
Breakfast was a little disappointing... quite a lot of heavy food. The hotel are obviously trying but a simple fresh breakfast would be so much better. We didn't eat there in the evening so can't comment. The staff are charming but definitely it lacks having a knowledgable front of house ..
The foyer and restaurant are a little dark but the rooms were great and as mentioned the best location. We took cab to the beach and in the evenings wondered around the local streets and bars.
I would recommend this hotel for its location and also our rooms were great.

Room Tip: We had 2 rooms on the first floor with port views.

We came for one night during carnaval and couldn't resist coming back for two nights at the end of our trip! The hotel is beautiful, decorated in Bahian style, with care and great taste. First of all, the beds are huge, we had beautiful views on the balcony of the bay both times. The owner and everyone who works here are lovely and very attentive and always concerned about your needs. The breakfast is ALL DAY and complete with fruit, an omelette, two fresh fruit dishes, and cakes!! The lobby is beautiful with views of the street and the location could not be better, right in the heart of Pelorinho. We ate at the restaurant one night and it was delicious. We are already planning our stay here next year. SIMPLY PERFECT!!!
