Reviewed 24 August 2017

I stayed at Vila Pedra Mar in November 2016 with my husband and it was, without a doubt, the highlight of our three week trip to Brazil.

The house is perched on the side of a lush, forested cliff and, as you approach from a distance, has quite a distinctive, dramatic appearance not a little reminiscent of a luxury, celebrity hideaway.

One of the owners, Riann, met us from the dock in Angra dos Reis to transport us in his private speedboat to the hotel. This all took place in the cold, pouring rain and wasn't quite the glamorous, idyllic start to our stay that we had envisaged. However, as we approached the villa's private dock, Karien (Riann's wife) was waiting for us with towels and a warm smile to cheer us up. As soon as we climbed the steps (quite steep, for those with mobility issues) and into the villa all thoughts of the raging storm outside deserted us.

The photos on Trip Adviser and the website really do not do this property justice. It really is spectacular. From the large, open plan sitting/dining room with panoramic, open-air, ocean views, to the beautifully appointed Suite Brisa do Mar (Honeymoon Suite) or the wonderful roof-terrace, the atmosphere is warm and inviting with contemporary design and thoughtful touches everywhere (and very cute feline friend).

Riann's father built the house in 2007 and Riann and Karien then took it over as a deluxe guesthouse and have added luxurious touches to it ever since. Given the high quality of the accommodation, it really is quite out of place with the rest of the island and more in keeping with the chic bolt-holes you might find somewhere like Buzios, but with added charm.

We stayed in the Suite Brisa do Mar and it really is worth the extra money. Not only is it much larger than the other two rooms but also has two terraces, both with wonderful sea views. I did briefly see the other rooms and can confirm that they are also luxuriously appointed and spacious but just do not have outdoor space. An added touch of class is the walk-in, open rainforest shower.

The rest of the property is decorated in a similar chic, understated style and provides all the comforts of home. There is a deck for sunbathing out front, overlooking the local beach (not really a tourist beach) where you can watch the boats coming and going. Furthermore, you can dive straight into the sea from the deck; a wonderful experience. Other local coves and larger beaches are in walking distance from the property through the jungle. Some are quite far, though, and can be quite tough going for those with mobility issues.

Spectacular as the house is and comfortable as the accommodation is, the real highlight of Vila Pedra Mar is the food and service.

The benefit of the room rates being half-board is that you can take advantage of cooking of a very high standard. Karien provides a spectacular breakfast every morning either on a little terrace by the sitting room or on the roof. Riann cooks a 3-course dinner every evening, always on the roof (weather permitting) which rivals any of the restaurants on the island for quality. They can offer recommendations for restaurants for lunch and there are two or three good ones in the local village.

The service is second to none. I have been fortunate enough to stay in many 5-star, luxury hotels around the world and I can honestly say that the service from Riann, Karien and all their team rivals that of anywhere I have been. In fact, as the place is so small, it is far more personal than many. We also took out their speedboat for a snorkelling trip around the island for a day and they provided drinks and snacks and a wonderful skipper, a mine of information about the island. They can also recommend and provide many other excursions around the island.

The accommodation and services are not cheap, but worth every penny. It is not often that you discover a real gem of a property like this. I wholeheartedly recommend Vila Pedra Mar and wish Karien, Riann and their team a successful future. My husband and I would return there in a heart-beat.

Room Tip: Choose the Suite Brisa do Mar for a more luxurious, spacious room with outdoor space. All rooms have...

The lodge has beautiful design an amazing view! It´s the best location on the island to stay, very quiet (nothing to compare with Abraao, which is the main vilage of the island and it gets very busy in summer time) near Aventureiro Beach (it´s possible to hike or to take a boat trip) and also near the beautiful lagoons
The village is adorable, a pintorec fishermen town with old sardine factories, used for different purposes today.

Room Tip: it´s best to plan your trip, transportation to/around the island in advance

When I say that our stay at Vila Pedra Mar couldn't have been better, it literally couldn't have been more perfect on any level. My fiance and I are avid travelers, and our 3 night experience here blew stays at 5 star hotels around the world out of the water. This gorgeous villa is nestled on the side of a hill overlooking the ocean, as well as a quaint beach to the left; the design of the house/hotel ensures that every room, from the kitchen to the honeymoon suite, includes a breathtaking view. We visited in the "winter," which meant we were able to enjoy the peace of being pretty much the only tourists on this side of the island coupled with still 75+ degree weather, mostly-clear waters for snorkeling and diving, and rooftop dinners under a starry sky.

Speaking of food - THE FOOD. Being globetrotter foodies, we usually pick places to travel based on what kinds of delicious, exotic treats we can discover. Our trip to Vila Pedra Mar was a last minute decision with no pre-planning, and we couldn't have been more fortunate to end up in a place where not only both breakfast and dinner is included, but it is some of the most amazing food we've ever eaten! On top of that, the couple of restaurants on the beach boast incredible eats as well -- beach side cabana where you'll be served the catch of the day in delicious fashion to actual gourmet French cuisine -- so even for lunch, you're never without.

Finally, let's mention how this vila operates like a dream. The family running it (who are some of the sweetest people you will meet) was on top of everything ... before we had even considered that we needed to organize something, they were already doing it. If beaches, views, and food aren't selling you - come solely for the reason that you should meet this family. People as kind, gracious, and generous as them don't come around too often.

Bottom line - this place is a unique paradise that shouldn't be missed. We can't wait to come back!

This is what a Honeymoon is all about! The suite is gorgeous, with sea views from every part of the room (even the shower!). Everything about this room fits the idea of understated luxury. The bedding is soft and inviting, the mattress is great, the furniture around the room is situated in the perfect location just to chill in/on and watch the world go by outside.

Dinner was a fantastic experience every night. The first night we ate on the roof and the food was lovely! The view was also amazing, because of the lack of light pollution it seemed like you could see every star in the sky! We also got to see the International Space Station go by. The other two nights we ate in the lounge/dining area. All the meals were delicious and a lot of the key elements were locally sourced. Breakfasts were also provided and were great. I ate so many crepes and my husband loved the special scrambled eggs that have on offer.

There is also incredible snorkeling available off of the private jetty the Pousada has. We sadly didn't get to see turtles but the guests before us did, and we are definitely jealous we missed them! We did see a lot of fish though, and crabs and lobsters!

We are already planning a trip back, this time bringing as many of our friends that we can! A wonderful piece of accessible paradise!

Attention to detail in every aspect on this piece of paradise. Excellent hosting, food and service rounds off the iddylic setting! Will have to return to experience it all over again.

The experience starts with a warm welcome on the private jetty by the owners and hosts, a quick introduction and tour of the property and then settling into your new surrounds.

This is one of those places that you will regret not experiencing!
