I stayed at Vila Pedra Mar in November 2016 with my husband and it was, without a doubt, the highlight of our three week trip to Brazil.
The house is perched on the side of a lush, forested cliff and, as you approach from a distance, has quite a distinctive, dramatic appearance not a little reminiscent of a luxury, celebrity hideaway.
One of the owners, Riann, met us from the dock in Angra dos Reis to transport us in his private speedboat to the hotel. This all took place in the cold, pouring rain and wasn't quite the glamorous, idyllic start to our stay that we had envisaged. However, as we approached the villa's private dock, Karien (Riann's wife) was waiting for us with towels and a warm smile to cheer us up. As soon as we climbed the steps (quite steep, for those with mobility issues) and into the villa all thoughts of the raging storm outside deserted us.
The photos on Trip Adviser and the website really do not do this property justice. It really is spectacular. From the large, open plan sitting/dining room with panoramic, open-air, ocean views, to the beautifully appointed Suite Brisa do Mar (Honeymoon Suite) or the wonderful roof-terrace, the atmosphere is warm and inviting with contemporary design and thoughtful touches everywhere (and very cute feline friend).
Riann's father built the house in 2007 and Riann and Karien then took it over as a deluxe guesthouse and have added luxurious touches to it ever since. Given the high quality of the accommodation, it really is quite out of place with the rest of the island and more in keeping with the chic bolt-holes you might find somewhere like Buzios, but with added charm.
We stayed in the Suite Brisa do Mar and it really is worth the extra money. Not only is it much larger than the other two rooms but also has two terraces, both with wonderful sea views. I did briefly see the other rooms and can confirm that they are also luxuriously appointed and spacious but just do not have outdoor space. An added touch of class is the walk-in, open rainforest shower.
The rest of the property is decorated in a similar chic, understated style and provides all the comforts of home. There is a deck for sunbathing out front, overlooking the local beach (not really a tourist beach) where you can watch the boats coming and going. Furthermore, you can dive straight into the sea from the deck; a wonderful experience. Other local coves and larger beaches are in walking distance from the property through the jungle. Some are quite far, though, and can be quite tough going for those with mobility issues.
Spectacular as the house is and comfortable as the accommodation is, the real highlight of Vila Pedra Mar is the food and service.
The benefit of the room rates being half-board is that you can take advantage of cooking of a very high standard. Karien provides a spectacular breakfast every morning either on a little terrace by the sitting room or on the roof. Riann cooks a 3-course dinner every evening, always on the roof (weather permitting) which rivals any of the restaurants on the island for quality. They can offer recommendations for restaurants for lunch and there are two or three good ones in the local village.
The service is second to none. I have been fortunate enough to stay in many 5-star, luxury hotels around the world and I can honestly say that the service from Riann, Karien and all their team rivals that of anywhere I have been. In fact, as the place is so small, it is far more personal than many. We also took out their speedboat for a snorkelling trip around the island for a day and they provided drinks and snacks and a wonderful skipper, a mine of information about the island. They can also recommend and provide many other excursions around the island.
The accommodation and services are not cheap, but worth every penny. It is not often that you discover a real gem of a property like this. I wholeheartedly recommend Vila Pedra Mar and wish Karien, Riann and their team a successful future. My husband and I would return there in a heart-beat.
