The exhibits are well laid out and do a good job of expelling the history and story of the region. The museum store has a number of reasonably-priced souvenir items.

Though the mummy hall was under renovation and I was thus very disappointed, it was still quite an educational visit in 2 hours. There is so much information about the two ruins, Jiaohe (Yar City) and Gaochang (Qocho City), that was way more than at the ruins themselves, so I also recommend learning about them at the museum first before visiting the actual ruins, just to enhance your onsite experience. We also learned more about different animals living in he area from 20 some millions years ago. It was pretty cool!

To understand Turfan history and history of Xinjiang. You must visit the museum first. It is located at the town center. Recently many important artifacts from The Astana Cemetery /The Astana-Karakhoja Ancient Tombs(阿斯塔那古墓) , the archeological site of largest concentration of the tombs of Han people, is keep there, including the mummy. It served mainly as the cemetery for the descendants of Chinese settlers in Gaochang from the 4th century to the first half of the 8th century. There are special theme on silk routes, people, culture and history. To know them well, you must visit the museum.

Very good introduction into Turpan's and Xinjiang's history.

Surprisingly good English in this museum. Also, it provides for free entry and people are incredibly friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, the museum shop is not up to standards and could do better.

By all means visit this museum if you're in Turpan. The dinasour display is wonderful, attractively curated with good information. Definitely worth seeing. My only disappointment was the museum's second floor was being renovated which precluded our being able to view the ancient mummies.
