This hotel looked very interesting from the outside but what a disappointment the rooms were. My room in an upstairs room in one of the more remote courtyards was very tatty and it felt like all the rubbish furniture had been dumped in one room, never felt so depressed in a room. The open aspect of the courtyards can feel quite unsafe at night especially as you have to walk through the side streets to get to the reception areas. Staff are not very helpful and the breakfast was very poor. On the positive side it is away from the very busy tourist streets and there are one or two nice cafes close by.

Very nice hotel conveniently positioned in Lijiang old city.
Satisfactory standard on the room, including bathroom.
Breakfast was not particularly impressive, although it combined both Chinese and Western food. They should really attempt to improve their bacon!
Friendly hotel with good service, few understand any English. Our English speaking guide was indispensable.

The good: nice hotel in old traditional style; rooms are located in different courtyards; situated in the southern part of the city (the quiet part, if compared to the northern part); decent rooms; 5 star rating;

The bad: the rooms quality vary, if possible check them first; if you're here for the nightlife, then it's a 20-30 minutes walk though the labyrinthian alleys to the northern part;

The tip: the hotel's area is quite big, if you get a room in a further away courtyard, be prepared to walk a while before getting to the lobby;

First view of the Hexi is a "wow" moment. It fits beautifully into the overall feel of the ancient town. Once inside it continues to feel right. Our room was basic but clean and adequate. Breakfast on our mornings here was non-existant - if you arrive after the first sitting (we were there by 8) then it's just bad luck. Tables aren't cleared and food is not replenished in any way to indicate that the staff have any interest at all. Unfortunately this will be my lasting impression of the Hexi - none of the staff seemed interested in anything much at all. Bit of a shame because the potential is there...

Rooms are spread out in small clusters within traditional style courtyard buildings. Everything clean, wifi in room. Hotel is nicely located in the old town, but on the periphery of the noise and crowds closer to the center of the old town. Rooms aren't huge but adequate. You can take a break from the crowds and sit on your balcony or within your courtyard to decompress for a bit before heading out into the bustle. Suggest asking for upstairs room because the traditional wood framing may transmit noise to rooms below.
