Recently stayed with our OAT tour. Hotel is convenently located to old town. Has a nice room upstairs and was somewhat quiet except for locals talking loudly in the hallways. Two choices for breakfast which we selected the Western which was just ok with few choices. Be careful walking in old town do to locals speeding though on motor bikes.

From the front you think that the hotel looks great. But things went rapidly downhill from there. Our room had that damp musky old smell when we first walked in. The decor was drab and brown, and there were so few lights, it was just like we were in a cave.

We asked for another room but because it was high season, the only other room they could show us was equally damp, dark and dismal. So we stayed put.

So now for the list of other horrible features;
- Dirty room. The carpets were dirty, as were the sheets and towels, and the bathroom.
- No maintenance. As in most Chinese hotels, I think this department is on permanent holiday. Windows don't open, toilet seat is almost detached, drawers don't close, sticking room door, extractor fan does nothing, etc.
- Ancient towels. These were so old they were grey, threadbare, and actually had holes in them.
- Rock hard bed. Despite 3 paper thin mattress toppers, the bed is still so hard it hurts! The springs are starting to push through so it makes it wonder when the mattresses were last changed.
- Noisy. The hotel bar has a live singer into the night, and the kitchen staff are crashing around from before 6am. In between you might get about 6 hours sleep except the walls are paper thin and inconsiderate Chinese families return at all hours shouting and crashing about.
- Tried to get a drink in the afternoon from the hotel bar. I was shown the soda fridge! No tea, coffee, beer...
- The breakfasts are poor. I would add that I am speaking as a westerner who probably makes up a very small percentage of the hotel guests, but go to breakfast with low expectations.
- Aircon is either on or off. There is no temperature setting and the air gets no colder than outside.
- Roadworks. I can't hold the hotel responsible for this, but they are digging up the paths around the hotel to lay pipes, so no chance of a peaceful daytime rest in your room.

About the only good things I can say is that the WiFi is pretty good, and it is only a 5 minute walk to the old city.

One tip, avoid rooms in the higher number courtyards (ie 20 or higher) if you don't want to be wearing earplugs during the night.

First hotel in lifetime of travel that had no heat (wife and I slept in clothes).

First hotel to provide two complementary condoms along with toothbrush, comb, etc. Management must be an enthusiastic supporter of China's former one-child policy-or maybe the place doubles as a by-the-hour venue.

Good location in Old City. Exterior spaces reasonably attractive with lots of stone. This is being generous.

This hotel is in a series of small courtyards off lane ways. Quiet and with security guards on the corners. Pleasant room upstairs. Restaurants close by. It is in the Old Town but still about 20 mins walk to the Mu Palace. Breakfast just OK.

I was on a tour of China, and stayed in 7 hotels This one was by far the poorest, and did not offer the services which the other hotels did.
The room was basic, in need of decorating (one part of the wallpaper was repaired with a patch of about 7 sq. cm.), the room had no safe or fridge, the business centre computers weren't working (I was there for 3 nights and there was time for the hotel staff to investigate the problem), no bar, although warm beer was on offer in the restaurant. Breakfast was of a poor standard and limited. The staff seemed indifferent. The only positive feature was the location, on the south side of the old town, far enough away to avoid the noise, but close enough for access to the shops and restaurants.
