This was our first overnight stop in Ecuador and we really enjoyed it. Each room is situated in a beautiful wooden lodge with its own wood-burning fire place for chilly evenings and private balcony looking out over the lake and Imbabura volcano. The grounds include beautifully cared for gardens and flowers adorning the paths to each individual cabin. The main lodge was charmingly decorated and served us a delicious dinner (several of us tried their various fish dishes and all were very good) and breakfast the next morning. The facilities appear to offer various water sports, although we were not there for long enough to participate. Word to the wise - if you're hoping to connect to the wifi, it is spotty at best (unless you happen to be the only guest at the hotel).

The property is located a 10 minute-drive from Otavalo, which also makes it a nice escape that is still close enough to the "action."

This lodge was a nice surprise with individual rustic cabins along a pristine mountain lake. Fountains and waterways were throughout the property along with putt putt and access to water sports. Restaurant was excellent, serving very good local trout. Very comfortable open air lounge areas where you could have a beer and watch the ducks and gaze at the mountains beyond the lake. No heat, but wood fireplaces that they light for you at night. Unfortunately, our sleep was disturbed by loud parties at neighboring lodges. I don't know if this is an ongoing problem, so you may want to ask.

Unfortunately we spent only one night at Puertolago during our Ecuador travel with Gate 1 tour. Our lodge (#12) was so cozy with a wood burning fireplace, grounds were kept to perfection and the whole ambiance was so magical despite a rainy evening and foggy morning. Beds were so comfortable, even bed warmers were provided under the blankets. Bathroom is big and clean with a fresh flowers in a small vase - what a nice touch. Fireplace and candle provided additional special ambiance and warmth. Dinner was great (cannot comment on the cost of the food since it was a part of our tour package), especially with a beautiful view of the Lago San Pablo lake and Andes mountains. Breakfast was nothing special - scrambled eggs, bacon, muffin, and juice - not a buffet style. Grounds have a kids playground and water sports equipment. Some lodges have screen porches with hot tubs. The 'office' building (where restaurant located) has a pool table. Wi-Fi was available at our lodge. Needless to say that nature around is absolutely stunning! I wish to come back and stay there at least for a week!

Arriving at Puertolago was a visual delight after the being in the city of Quito. Check out the photos here of the grounds and you will be able to experience the setting of the hotel. Llamas and alpacas on the grounds as well. Sorry we arrived later in the afternoon and left after breakfast. Fortunately we were able to walk around the grounds and enjoy the landscaping and the beautiful lakefront setting. Dinner and breakfast in the dining room were good too.

Located right along the shore of the lake, and with rooms with stunning views, fireplaces and clean accomodations, this place has it all.

The restaurant offered quality food that even the finicky eater can enjoy without any problem.
