This resort is perfect for an intimate, quiet, relaxing getaway. You must arrive by boat (no land access) and on the way you pass lots of big, ugly, commercial resorts. Arriving at Melina there isn't much to see from the boat, no pier, and only a few glimpses of buildings through the tree. Be prepared to wade ashore although the staff come to help carry your bags from boat to shore.
The staff are lovely and welcoming and the slow pace of the resort is refreshing. We stayed in two rooms during our stay. The first was beachfront and was nice, but the real highlight was when the staff asked us if we'd like to move into the treehouse at no extra cost! We were there right before the onset of rainy season and most of the tourists were clearing out, so the treehouse was empty. This pleased me very much and it was really something special staying in the treehouse.
The food was great, but there is a limited selection for each night generally two dishes to choose from; but I think you could still order from the lunchtime menu if you really wanted. The portions weren't huge, so my boyfriend got a second serve on a couple of occasions!
The best food experience was on our last night when we requested a private BBQ. The staff set us up a table and chairs right on the waterfront and cooked us BBQ food and brought it over. We had tiki torches (felt like a Survivor reward dinner!) and it was just perfect and very romantic. The cocktails were also amazing, the bartender Ray was great and could make you things that weren't even on the menu!
The staff can organise day trips for you to go snorkelling at an island, visiting waterfalls etc. and you can also snorkel just from the beach (although the snorkelling trips were more exciting!). You can also walk to the towns to the north and south of the resort via a jungle path. The walk in itself was great fun, you can see monkeys and igunanas and lots of lizards and birds, but do take insect repellent as the mozzies will try to eat you alive! We also walked across the island one day with another couple from the resort. It takes a couple of hours but is worth it, and you can swim in the ocean on the east side of the island to cool down when you arrive. We also visited to turtle sanctuary while we were on the east side, which was interesting, but definitely not a full day activity!
The only downside to our stay was that my boyfriend got stung by a hornet one evening, out of the blue. One of the staff, Jenny, was a nurse though, so she took good care of him. Not a nice thing to happen, but not something can could have been avoided really!
We didn't want to leave, Melina is so idyllic! I couldn't recommend it more. The food etc. prices might not be as cheap as elsewhere, but remember that everything has to be delivered by boat, and they are not buying in bulk like the big resorts!
In a word, perfect :)
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- • We are a quiet family resort and totally unsuitable for those looking for a late night or party venue.• Our intention is to provide comfortable accommodation combined with a personal service. We are not offering luxury and have no aspiration towards 5 star ratings.• We build our rooms to incorporate as much of the natural surroundings as possible. Many of the rooms have large rocks as features and some include trees in bathrooms.• Our back garden is literally the Tropical rain forest, as such we are prone to animals occasionally wandering in. In such circumstances our resident biologists are on hand to remove animals safely. We ask guests to keep any food items to a minimum in bedrooms and to always keep items in a sealed container, food items left uncovered will attract animals, in particular ants.• In support of the local economy we try as much as possible to employ local staff. This can at times create confusion as there are many cultural differences, we ask our guests to please report any shortcomings to the reception staff who will deal with any issues immediately ... more less
