“Perfect Paradise”
Reviewed 25 February 2012

This resort is perfect for an intimate, quiet, relaxing getaway. You must arrive by boat (no land access) and on the way you pass lots of big, ugly, commercial resorts. Arriving at Melina there isn't much to see from the boat, no pier, and only a few glimpses of buildings through the tree. Be prepared to wade ashore although the staff come to help carry your bags from boat to shore.

The staff are lovely and welcoming and the slow pace of the resort is refreshing. We stayed in two rooms during our stay. The first was beachfront and was nice, but the real highlight was when the staff asked us if we'd like to move into the treehouse at no extra cost! We were there right before the onset of rainy season and most of the tourists were clearing out, so the treehouse was empty. This pleased me very much and it was really something special staying in the treehouse.

The food was great, but there is a limited selection for each night generally two dishes to choose from; but I think you could still order from the lunchtime menu if you really wanted. The portions weren't huge, so my boyfriend got a second serve on a couple of occasions!
The best food experience was on our last night when we requested a private BBQ. The staff set us up a table and chairs right on the waterfront and cooked us BBQ food and brought it over. We had tiki torches (felt like a Survivor reward dinner!) and it was just perfect and very romantic. The cocktails were also amazing, the bartender Ray was great and could make you things that weren't even on the menu!

The staff can organise day trips for you to go snorkelling at an island, visiting waterfalls etc. and you can also snorkel just from the beach (although the snorkelling trips were more exciting!). You can also walk to the towns to the north and south of the resort via a jungle path. The walk in itself was great fun, you can see monkeys and igunanas and lots of lizards and birds, but do take insect repellent as the mozzies will try to eat you alive! We also walked across the island one day with another couple from the resort. It takes a couple of hours but is worth it, and you can swim in the ocean on the east side of the island to cool down when you arrive. We also visited to turtle sanctuary while we were on the east side, which was interesting, but definitely not a full day activity!

The only downside to our stay was that my boyfriend got stung by a hornet one evening, out of the blue. One of the staff, Jenny, was a nurse though, so she took good care of him. Not a nice thing to happen, but not something can could have been avoided really!

We didn't want to leave, Melina is so idyllic! I couldn't recommend it more. The food etc. prices might not be as cheap as elsewhere, but remember that everything has to be delivered by boat, and they are not buying in bulk like the big resorts!

In a word, perfect :)

I went with two friends to Tioman and stayed at Melina Beach Resort. Everything about the trip was fantastic. The staff were so friendly and helpful, the food was great, especially the BBQ!

We also loved staying in rooms that were built into the rocks and the trees, it was like an adventure.

We would all recommend anyone to stay there! It would suit families, couples, groups of friends - brilliant!!

We stayed in the one and only tree house of the resort. It was such an unforgettable experience! The beach was fantastic, and despite the fact that there were 2 school groups having their field trips at the resort, we did not feel disturbed at all as they were out most of the time. Our tree house is just at the beach front, and the intermittent splashing of the waves acted as a lullaby. The pizza was delicious but other local delicacies we tried were only mediocre. There were some ants in the tree house, but that's what you would expect to get in the nature!

Lovely place to stay - spotlessly clean chalets, tastefully decorated and right on the beach - very photogenic with palms, boulders and white sand. Plenty of hot water and the air con works. There are also chalets further back, backing onto the jungle and a tree house on the beach. A path extends behind the resort, providing an easy coast walk through the jungle to Paya or Genting on which you can see monkeys and monitor lizards. Fabulous coral reefs for snorkelling. There is snorkelling equipment available, as well as kayaks, which you can paddle out the demarcation buoys, and tether for a base while you snorkel. Food is good - buffet for breakfast and dinner - Western and Asian, with light meals available during the day. Staff were very helpful. There were several families with young children - seems like a good family destination. Very quiet and laid back. The only quibble I had were the frequent, noisy speedboats and ferries which go past - hardly the fault of the resort.

We stayed at Melina Beach in Tioman in late September. Tioman is beautiful, but so laid back (which some people will love) it was a little frustrating. It is difficult to get meals at certain times and each area is really small so you often need to rely on really expensive water taxis. Having said that, the beach and snorkelling was nice, although the day we went diving the weather was bad, so we didn't see anything mind blowing.
Regarding Melina Beach. It is in a beautiful location and the room we had (beachfront) was okay. However, it was in a row of other rooms, and the walls weren't particularly thick. One of the managers/owners seemed totally out of her depth (although another Australian lady arrived later to assist and she was much better). For example, we asked for a mosquito net and were told "oh you probably won't need it", to which we replied, "yeah, but we want it, and all the other rooms have it (including hers". We never got it and got woken up by mosquitos that seemed to be breeding in the pipes in the bathroom. Our room didn't have a fridge until we asked twice. I asked the female owner/manager to organise diving for us which she forgot to do (her brother was much more efficient and did it on the spot). When we arrived on the morning flight she said "you must be starving, have the omlette it is great", then tried to charge us for that meal later (without actually telling us it wasn't included). I would've been fine to pay IF she had said, "this breakfast isn't included, but you must be hungry and the omlette is great". The last thing that was annoying was that our roof started leaking during heavy rain and when we told them, they said "oh just put a towel down". If you are paying $30 a night for a room, then of course I would expect this, but we were paying much more (I think about $80).
Otherwise, the house reef was nice, the island is beautiful, and it is great if you want to do nothing. But food is super expensive as are drinks. Overall, it was okay, but the service needs a real over-hall. I probably wouldn't recommend it. Stay at a cheap guest house instead where you know what to expect.
