Hotel is a lovely old building , built in the colonial style. It is not close to anywhere for walking out to ( though you wouldn’t want to go to Sandakan which is a bit of a dump) so you have to rely on services within the hotel for all your needs.
Rooms are spacious. Bathroom is very modern with fabulous shower but rest of bedroom could do with updating. It is however kept very clean with regular exchange of bedding.
Facilities in the hotel include a large free form pool with slide and a children’s pool, also with small slide. There is table tennis, a fully equipped gym, steam room and sauna, though they weren’t operating whilst we’ve been here. We have had a good aromatherapy massage, reasonably priced at about £27 for 60 mins.
Staff are all very pleasant and helpful
Where the hotel falls down is on the food.
The first night we ate in the on site Chinese restaurant. It’s the only restaurant in the hotel that serves alcohol. My wife and I both ordered. My meal arrived and they then told my wife they couldn’t supply her choice. Would she like something else?
She had half eaten some spring rolls which were cold and greasy and my dinner was inedible so we decided to leave and get a snack in the bar.
Next night we had a bar snack. Not brilliant but edible at least. ( The lady that runs the bar works very hard and is extremely helpful and pleasant. )
Tonight we ate in the hotel restaurant ( No alcohol served). Again my meal was inedible. I couldn’t cut through the steak it was so tough so I ended up having half my wife’s Burger which was just Ok.
Because there is no where else you can get food the hotel needs to greatly improve its standards in this respect. Dining is part of the holiday, particularly for us with a nice glass of wine or a beer. If we had known it was No alcohol in the dining room we would have booked elsewhere. As it is we are looking forward to moving on on Friday
