Breakfast was adequate, dinner was terrible. Kids didn't want to eat breakfast after eating dinner the first night

Having travelled in SL many times I've had some great food and the town of Dambulla does not really offer the quality that I've seen elsewhere. Options seem a bit limited. That said, the food here is reliable, reasonably priced and very authentic. The staff at the hotel are extremely welcoming so overall the experience of eating here is a good one. Most people opt for the buffet dinner which offers a variety of curries with rice (usually two types), noodles, papadums to accompany. There is usually some form of samba land a salad as well. Lentil curry is an ever present as it should be and there us one meat/fish option which usually seems to be chicken (as noted in review of Athula restaurant do not expect chicken as in UK/US ETC). The flavours vary greatly as does the level of chilli and the chicken is usually quite hot. Dessert is interesting with a number of slightly odd concoctions but also plenty of fresh fruit etc. If you don't like curry then there's an a la cartel menu of more western type food which all looks ok although I haven't tried it. Drinks are available and reasonably priced. It's a little mire expensive than some local eateries (we are talking pennies here!) but I thought the buffet was a bit more extensive and atmosphere better.

The service in Sundaras Restaurant is undoubtedly the highlight. The local staff members are gorgeous, always happy and always offering help and a big smile. If the European staff members are serving, don't expect the same, or any, warmth.
The meals are average, nothing special and for the one protein/meat curry each night it was clear that cheap and small cuts were used. They were pretty much bones and curry with a sliver of chicken!
This was at the beginning of my Sri Lankan travels and I certainly enjoyed significantly better elsewhere.

Nice place to have lunch while commuting between Kandy and Dambulla. Tasty food, very friendly service.
