“Great Villa and Great Staff”
Reviewed 10 April 2016 for a stay in March 2016

Five of us stayed at Madampe House in the last week of March 2016 and we had an excellent time there.

We were met at Colombo airport and the transfer along the new highway took only two hours.

Madampe House is a large, open plan villa set in a village location. The location gives a feel of the “real” Sri Lanka rather than being in a busy resort but it benefits from being about 2 kms south of Ambalangoda and 10km north of Hikkaduwa which, as a resort town, has a large selection of tourist facilities as well as a large uncrowded beach. Madampe House is also literally five minutes’ walk from a sweep of stunning, virtually empty beach but you may want just to laze by the villa’s pool.

Throughout our stay Jayantha and the other staff couldn’t do enough for us. We had numerous delicious meals (which were exceptional value) and a number of trips and transport was arranged for us throughout. I’d recommend the River Safari, trips to Galle (40 minutes by train or car) and the turtle sanctuary.

This was our first visit to Sri Lanka and we will definitely be coming back. The people were very friendly, the weather very good, the beaches stunning and overall it’s a very good value destination.

I would definitely recommend Madampe House for your stay.

“A fabulous holiday, beautiful house, and beautiful country”
Reviewed 21 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

A stay at Madampe House offers its guests the perfect balance between a beautiful and private holiday, yet well situated to see the many amazing sights both locally and further afield. The house itself is well designed, light and airy. Alistair who designed the house told us that it was designed to take advantage of the sea breezes and whilst I couldn't quite imagine how before I arrived, it certainly does that to great effect, keeping us all cool and comfortable even on the hottest of days. The house was built in 2014 and is well designed and spacious. Photos don't do it justice - you need to be there and live in it to truly appreciate it.

Each bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom - and how I fell in love with our inside/outside bathroom in the master bedroom! I had seen this format with other villas when I was researching places in Sri Lanka and wasn't sure how I felt about it - but, wow... it was great! Of course, it is COMPLETELY private, but showering (or bathing in the large tub) felt even more refreshing and relaxing when you could see the trees and hear the wildlife all around you! Pretty cool. All the beds have mosquito nets around them to keep those pesky little blighters at bay. Unfortunately despite 50% DEET products and an array of other medication, the little blighters feasted on me whenever/wherever they could... but this happens to me wherever I go, and the rest of our group did not generally suffer.

Special mention needs to be made of Jayantha, Yanusha, Samson and our chef, Roshan. These guys go well over and above to ensure your stay is perfect. We've stayed in many villas over the years throughout Europe, and nothing and no-one has compared to the incredible welcome, friendliness, and overall care that this team gives you. Breakfast, lunch and dinner was always amazing - and part of the fun are the visits to Ambalagoda in a tuk tuk to buy the ingredients. Jayantha is the perfect host and not only helped us day to day, but also organised many trips for us - always accompanying us as well and looking after us. We visited the Elephant Sanctuary at Pinnewala, and in Kandy - the Temple of the Sacred Tooth and the Botanical Gardens. Closer to home was Galle Fort, the turtle hatchery, a boat trip around Madampe Lake where we went to a Buddhist temple, visited Cinnamon Island and saw much wildlife; meeting Dudley and seeing his amazing Batik works, the mask museum at Ambalagoda and much more.

Talking of wildlife... from the garden - yes, the garden - we saw an array of wildlife over our stay: monitor lizards, parrots, frogs, monkeys, squirrels (look like chipmunks), snake, tree frogs, fruit bats, turtles, fish, grasshoppers, fireflys, and probably more that I can't remember now! Loved it. The garden itself is the perfect size -the top garden is beautifully kept and the pool is clean and lovely to cool down in. The lower part of the garden (accessed by a gate) is perfect to watch to spot the wildlife - the monitor lizards and mongooses often use this part of the garden (which goes directly down to the lake via an inset where the monitor lizards are often found, or via the jetty if you fancy using the canoe). If you have young children, the gate ensures that they cannot access this part easily.

As cliched as it sounds, we arrived in Sri Lanka as strangers, and left with friends. We visited Jayantha's house (about 50 metres away) and met his lovely wife Krishani, his father in law Louis, and his lovely aunt. We ate fruit from Jayantha's garden each day (including the freshest and tastiest coconuts and avocados... yum!) We felt very looked after and very welcomed into the local community as well. All in all, we loved our stay at Madampe House. We even grew to love the bread man.... To date, the best villa holiday I have ever been on - both in terms of the location and the staff. Thank you to all at Madampe House for helping make our stay just superb - I hope you will be very successful - you deserve to be. xx

Liked best: Too much to mention - the house, the service, the peace and quiet, the wildlife
Liked least: initially the breadman... but we grew to look forward to his little tunes... when we heard the breadman tune, we knew all was well in the world :)

“Beautiful !”

The house is beautifully and exactly as the pictures are showing. We had the honour to be the first guests and we had a great time ! The co owner ( jayantha ) is friendly and very helpful. He made us feel at home and helped us to settle and to discover the neighbourhood. We travelled with our 16 month old daughter and jayantha tried everything to make her feel at home as well.
Every morning a delicious breakfast is organised with fres fruits , fresh juices , tea , toasts ,eggs ,and sometimes a local speciality. Also an afternoon tea was provided every day with a biscuit or homemade pancake or something else delicious. We were treated very well and would reccomend anyone to stay in this lovely house. The house is very clean and modern. The mattresses are comfortable , there are mosquito nets which are needed but also give a romantic feel. The pool is very well maintained and it is very pleasant to swim in it.
Overall , we would come back and we are very happy that we booked this place.
The house is located close to a beautifully beach ( walking distance ) which we didn't go to much because at this time of the year the waves are high and therefore a little dangerous. We often took a tuc tuc to Bentota or Hikkaduwa to have a swim there.
Jayantha organised a tout to Galle , a tour to the elephant orphanage , some sightseeing in Colombo , a boat safari and many other small trips for us. We would definitely reccomend to see something of the environment because Sri Lanka is beautifully and has pleasantly surprised us. But also to stay at home and chill out is very pleasant in this lovely house.
