Compared to the Mingtown Hostel in Hangzhou, this one is not much different. However, I disagree that the staff was great. They were average compared to the other hostels from Mingtown. They did not exceed my expectations.

1. For example: on arrival the girl behind the reception desk was "busy" and asked us to checkin later. Even though there were no other people around.

2. They do not accept credit / debit cards so I had to walk all the way to the nearest ICBC bank, withdrawn cash from ATM and walk back.

3. Do not sleep in the dorm rooms without aircon unless you want to suffocate. This is the biggest downside for me on this trip. And because of this I will never stay with them again.

Mingtown hostels provide a good friendly, English speaking accommodation in China. And I've joined in Hangzhou as a member to get the small discount. Now I'm trying each one, one by one, for short visits as I travel around China for the next two years.

The location is amazing! Just a five minute walk to the bund, train station, and East Nanjing Road. The staff was very friendly and extremely helpful. The private room that I stayed in was quiet, spacious, and comfortable. The only complaint about the room would be that the walls were a very dirty and that hot water was not available 24/7.
The bar downstairs is very nice, they have cheap beer specials, a free pool table, good food ( a little pricey) and it is great to meet other people. The free Wi-fi worked well in the lobby while I was there. I definitely recommend this hostel.

Air-conditioners don't work, internet doesn't work, beds are uncomfortable, springs in your back, no supports, not chinese beds.
The only thing good about this place is the location and the bar area downstairs (overpriced, but there's a liquor store next door and a grocery store).
The staff is ok, they try to help.
No refunds.
If you're a "normal" tourist and you're staying here to go clubbing or look at rich people commercial buildings and stuff then sure, get ready to sweat. if you want to see the Bund and other stuff, just get a decent place in Hongqiao like Blue Mountain hostel, and use the subway system.
I wish I never booked this place.
Oh and they charge a deposit, which I guess is normal in Shanghai, but I haven't had to in other, better, places in China.

stay in this hotel for one night, big room space with day light. Value for money, allow early check in at 8am as we went during low season. No lift since it is an old building. Location ok , around 5 to 10 minutes walk to nearby places of interest such as the Bund and shopping streets

Great location near the Bund and East Nanjing Road, a short and flat walk from the metro. The common area was great for the warm Shanghai evenings!

Rooms were a small and bathrooms were dark but when you're spending most of your day outside they don't need to be great. The staff were lovely and helpful, and spoke good English.

We met some great people and would definitely book here if we come to Shanghai again!
