We stopped in to see the plantation and shockingly learned a whole lot about how Starbucks is doing research to help grow stronger and more disease resistant coffee plants. And to know that Starbucks is sharing this with all the coffee plantations in Costa Rica. Not just keeping it for them selves. Cheers

Hacienda Alsacia is a beautifully decorated place near Poas Volcano. It was opened a few weeks ago and I was surprised to see that people are coming to visit even though it's a bit hard to find the website to make an appointment. Sidenote: the website is starbuckscoffeefarm.com
The tour itself is quite short, but our tour guide was excellent. The place itself is more of an R&D base with a small visitors center which doubles as probably the nicest Starbucks I've ever seen. The view is breathtaking.
I really liked the fact that the machines that they use for the tour (mini versions of the larger, industrial ones used to process coffee) actually work. We got to see the coffee roaster with the help of Alejandra Guëll, a professional barista. That coffee is actually used in the beverages you can buy and is sold there as well. At the end of the tour you get a sample.
The work that Starbucks is doing is incredible, through research to support local coffee growers and its ethical approach to guaranteeing insurance for its coffee pickers (most of them foreigners from Nicaragua and Panama), education and access to medical services for the worker's children.
Costa Rica is key in the coffee production market and Starbucks knows this, so it's really cool to see them invest in my country in ways that could benefit lots of people. Overall, my family and I really liked this experience and would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn a little bit about how coffee is produced. There are other coffee tours in Costa Rica that are worth it also, but if you're close to Poas this is a great place to stop.

Passed by this place unintentionally on what was a busy bank holiday Friday, but decided to stop in as it looked nice and open and great views from the road side as we passed.

Newly opened but the $30 entrance fee quoted was a surprise, but thankfully as we are residents the locals fee was about half price, and so paid up, and promptly joined the 1pm English language tour.

The 90 minute tour that followed was interesting but the view down the hillside into the Central Valley was the high point and several great photo opportunities.

That said, the tour guide was interesting and the open terrace cafe area at the end was beautiful.

Well worth a visit for a couple of hours and easily reached.

Give it a try..

Thank Peter M

The view from the coffee bar is beautiful. It is a smaller coffee farm the is mostly for R&D I am told. The people were very accommodating and friendly.

Hacienda Alsacia is Disneyland style Starbucks with prices to match. We spent only enough time there to talk them into giving us a sample of their special house coffee. Just a 15 minute drive away is the real deal of a Costa Rican coffee farm where free samples of all their coffee is openly served. Coffee and gift prices are about half as much at the second plantation. Tours are sold at both locations.
