The first thing that hits you about Xandari as you drive up to the reception area is the unique architecture of the resort and beautifully-maintained gardens. We have never stayed in such a place before.

On arrival we were greeted and taken to reception where the receptionist (I think her name was Eloise) talked about the property & showed us to our bungalow. She obviously took great pride in her surroundings and having stayed there for only one night it is easy to understand why.

I got the impression that most guests tend to use it for only one night as a stopover as it is close to the airport. This is such a shame as the resort has such a lot to offer.
Early morning we took a walk to the waterfalls and it is well worth the hike to the 70ft waterfall. It is nearly all downhill to get there and we feared the trek back up to the resort but in the end it wasn't too bad.

The bungalow was very roomy, a magnificent view from our balcony, a mini-bar including free drinks, great food in the restaurant, the orchid house is also worth a visit. It is said that there is not much to do there but trips to Poas and Lapaz waterfalls are easily achievable during the day.

We were looking for an alternative to staying right in San Jose after arriving at Juan Santamaria late in the afternoon. Just a short drive out of town, Xandari is the perfect oasis of calm with contemporary and uniquely colourful architecture set amidst gorgeously landscaped lush foliage and flowers. Check-in was relaxed, as we were offered delicious fresh fruit beverages while sitting at the reception desk.

Our bungalow was set along a meandering path through tropical plantings. The view from our windows and the private terrace was spectacular as we were looking down into the valley seeing Alajuela spread out before us with the mountains in the background.

Just before dinner we booked a private open air jacuzzi in the spa and when we arrived it was all set up for us, candles glowing everywhere, flower petals strewn all around, some cold refreshing bottled water and snacks ready. But the piece de resistance was the view! The private jalapa was designed so that the jacuzzi is open to the air and looks out over the valley, by this time sparkling with lights from the town. Gorgeous and so romantic.

Dinner was on the terrace with the same incredible view, delicious, healthy food, professionally served. There was one wall in the dining room which was a fascinating collage of colourful broken dishes and dripping paint in contrasting colours. Sounds a little weird, but totally in keeping with the funky, artsy vibe of the whole property.

Breakfast the next morning was an assortment of gorgeous fresh fruit, cheeses, meats, breads and hard boiled eggs and of course, the amazing Costa Rican coffee.

I recommend if you are looking for a place to unwind, relax, enjoy nature and breathtaking views in a luxurious, romantic setting.

We've been to Costa Rica 14 times and traveled throughout the entire country where we've stayed at both very high end hotels and more reasonable eco-lodges. Once we discovered Xandari about 10 years ago, we wouldn't think of staying anywhere else at the beginning and/or end of our vacations! It's that special to us. First of all, the location is only 15 minutes from the airport and they provide free pick up service. The resort itself is beautiful with lovely gardens, two small swimming pools and one newer larger one, and spacious, very nicely decorated rooms and artistically designed public areas; the spa is stunning and they provide wonderful treatments. The dining room overlooks Alajuela and is really pretty at night when you're eating under the stars. There are several hikes on the premises and there are a variety of day trips you can arrange through the hotel if you want to see some of the sights. The food is very good and reasonably priced. What makes Xandari so special is the management and service; everyone is very helpful and we've never had a problem with any of our arrangements. We were married there 7 years ago and had 30 guests who still talk about how wonderful their experience was while at the resort. Five years later, we celebrated our anniversary there with 16 friends and it was the same experience for all of us. This year we returned again with 6 friends and nothing's really changed. Some of the reviews mention there isn't a lot to do, and in a sense, that's why we love to begin and end our trips there; in between, we enjoy the wonderful, diverse areas in the rest of the country.....the cloud forests, rainforests, and beaches. Overall, Xandari is one of our all time favorites!

After reading some reviews we thought this was a lavish resort. It is a lovely property, in Alajeula, around 30 minutes from the airport, way outside the city. We got to the hotel around 1 PM and quite honestly there was nothing much to do there. We took the hiking trail around the property, and the 4 waterfalls they described are only a few feet high. Two were just trickles of water. It was so hot when we came back from our walk we were looking for a place to swim, We were directed to a small lap pool, surrounded by old pool furniture and no towel or bar service. The rooms have no TVs or WiFi, so we ended up taking our ipads and coming back to the lobby and answered our emails. I read a previous review of someone who stayed in our same room, and we had quite a different take on things. The room was spacious, but i would hardly say the scenery was amazingly spectacular, just a nice garden view. I.think its all about managing your expectations. My husband and I are high end travelers, who look for quality at a reasonable prices. We don't mind paying more for a property, as long as we get good value. One positive thing i can say about this hotel is the service in the restaurant for dinner was very good. And the view from the dining area at night is really beautiful. But we would have prefered to stay in the city area of San Jose where there are sites to see and some nightlife. If you are looking for a resort to just chill and be disconnected for a day or two, then this resort might be the place for you. But if you'd like to have various activities available to you during the day, then i would stay elsewhere.
I can't comment on the breakfast, although it was included in our rooom rate, we got picked up by the travel agency earlier than breakfast was being served (7 AM).

Dear SAMD_10, Thank you for taking time to let us know how you feel.
Xandari has over 4 km of walking trails where you can find different kinds of falls, even now in the dry season when the river dries a little. Our highest, Cascada #4, is 70 ft high and very picturesque you probably did not get to this one.
We have 2 lap swimming pools with views to the mountains and our 125 ft. long sunset pool overlooking the Central Valley. There should always be towels by the pools, and we do offer pool service for meals or drinks via the phones near the towels, we apologize you were not able to enjoy these services.
We have no wifi or tv’s in villas as part the Xandari vision. There are activities within 1 hour that are easily achievable during the day like Poas Volcano, La Paz Waterfall, treetop canopy rides, coffee tours, etc.
Xandari expresses a state-of-mind, a feeling, an inspiration, an enhanced appreciation for both our natural environment and the human creative spirit that transforms dreams into reality. It is a sense of well-being, growing naturally from the marriage of creative expression and immersion in nature.
We are sorry to hear we did not meet your expectations.
