Dorothy has cheap rooms ($22 for a double with privat bathroom), and has a kitchen which is very nice if you are a budget traveler. Good wifi connection and a computer available. Location is good, it is near the busses and supermarket, center is also walkable in 5 minutes or so.

The room itself is basic, nothing fancy. In our case, because the water in the shower didn't completely dry, we got a kind of mellow smell after one shower/night. Solvable by drying the shower, and acceptable because of the price of the room.

Staff helpful if we had questions, they also offer tours.

We only stayed one night as we were just passing through from Monteverde to get to Tortoguero. Searching for accom was hard - so many hostels charge hotel rates & our budget cannot afford US$60 for a hostel.

On arrival to La Fortuna we went to Hotel Dorothy to check it out, we had the choice of many rooms. Some are definitely smaller & darker but we chose upstairs first on the right. Close to the communal balcony but bigger than other rooms & nice & bright. Hot water worked perfectly - one of the better showers we've had in Costa Rica. Room was basic but clean. Wifi worked well in our room & on the balcony. Nice view of the volcano from there as well.

It's 2 blocks from the Main Street so nice & quiet & only a short walk to restaurants & supermarkets.

Good value ($22) and they helped us organise our transport to Tortuguero. If you're on a budget, this is a good value option.

Hotel Dorothy might be one of the cheapest offers in town but definitely not worth it!
The rooms are very small, many of them are not completely dry which means that you find mold in several places. We stayed 3 nights, after the first two nights I was coughing so much because of the mold, that I asked to switch rooms. The next one was better but still didn´t feel healthy. The staff is rather unfriendly and unfortunately the don´t know anything about the city and the touristic offers. They wouldn´t even be able to recommend a restaurant. The first room also didn´t have hot water. Other guests told me their rooms also didn´t have that.
Positive is that they have a rather big kitchen-well equipped, Internet access working in the public area and in some of the rooms. Each rooms has a small nightstand with a drawer that you can lock.

All in all: I would definitely NOT go there again. Of course it´s cheap – but therefore it also doesn´t offer anything.

Room Tip: the rooms closest to the public Areas might have Internet Connection. Room 6 is moldy!

We stayed in room 18 which consisted of a private bathroom (hot water) a double bed and single bed all for 22$ a night. Its found a little bit off from the main road but it was no hassle. 3 minute walk and your in the middle of all the action. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. And just ask for anything and they'll be happy to help. Rooms are clean and their happy to oblige.
