We wanted a large house where all 10 of us (6 adults, 4 kids) could stay, and Henri's 4 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath house fit the bill in all respects. It was well set-up for self catering with plenty of dishes, pots and pans, range, fridge, rice cooker, coffee maker, washer, dryer, and A/C (bring laundry soap, paper towels, foil, charcoal and starter). There was plenty of hot water at the kitchen sink and in the showers. There is a supermarket in La Fortuna. The WiFi was reliable and fast.
If you want to eat out, there are several nearby options. The kids enjoyed the pool, and all of us enjoyed sitting on the front porch watching and listening to the birds and the changing views of the volcano. It is only a few hundred feet down to the lake.
The house was convenient to zip-lining (5.5 km), El Castillo (2 km), horseback riding (8 km), hiking trails and the other things you come to Costa Rica for. We could easily have spent 3 more days and filled the time.
There are only 2 down-sides to this place: once you turn off the road from La Fortuna, the road is gravel, not too bad for the first 2 km to the National Park entrance. After that, it is 8 km on a pot-holed gravel road to the house. We drove 3 compact 2WD cars, which managed the roads ok, but you will need to drive slowly (seldom over 20kmh). It will be faster and more comfortable with 4WD. They were working on the road in several areas during our stay, so there is likely to be some improvement soon. And we seemed to have more trouble with our cell phones here than elsewhere in CR. Maybe it was our equipment, but the Waze app, which was invaluable by-the-way, worked ok to get us there.
