“Not my favorite”

We stayed in four locations while in Costa Rica and I hate to say this was my least favorite. The owner was nice enough to let us come a day early, and the care takers Maria and Sergio were lovely people, but that it where the good ends for me. I have to say that part of my dissatisfaction is my own fault. After all of the research I did, I did not realize there was no AC, and as one of the previous renters mentioned, it's hot. No breeze and super buggy outside. Being in the middle of the palm plantation, in addition to the yard, really ramped up the bug population. I will say it is a beautiful property with a great view and if I were in my 20's we probably would not have minded all of the quirks of this bare bones property. There was also a comment made about how two women out here alone should be fine. That, combined with the bars on the windows just made us a little uneasy. I think if you are young and the most important thing is price and the view, this is a great place. If you are a little older and can afford a little more, keep looking.

“Off the beaten track to say the least, not our favorite rental property”
Reviewed 6 June 2014 for a stay in April 2014

Positives include a very secluded, beautiful beach, right in the backyard! We did some surfing and body surfing in CR and this place was great due to the fact that there were no one for miles! The water is beautiful and the place is very quiet. The caretaker seemed like a nice man and was quite helpful. There is a caretaker in the area that speaks no english, but can take apart a coconut in 10 seconds, very impressive!

Now for the negatives. I felt a little uneasy in this place for a couple of reasons. I feel it is quite dangerous having bars on the windows as there is no 'escape route'. Suppose a tsunami were to hit, there would be nowhere to go! I realize, I may be a little oversensitive with this, but to me the safety should be more important than theft prevention. Additionally, there is much burning in the area, suppose the place were to catch fire? In Canada, this simply would not be legal. Other safety issues included the occasional transient cutting through the yard. At times it felt a tad creepy. We refer this place as the 'hot house' because there was very little breeze or relief from the heat. The fans did help, however this place is in desperate need of AC. Every night was a struggle to sleep; the only way I managed was to get up every couple of hours and jump into the pool. Lastly, we had one night where it started to pour outside. This led to an infestation of small, biting ants charging inside and attacking anything in its way. We enjoyed our time as it was different, but it was a little out of the way for our needs and we found at the end of the day the place had more negatives than positives.

We a very glad you enjoyed the seclusion, peace and beauty of our ocean front beach home. We agree our staff are quite the magicians with a coconut! We are very proud of our staff and the fact that we hire trustworthy, highly skilled locals where English may not be their mother tongue. In fact, we enjoy the opportunity to practice our Spanish! Be assured our home is designed and secured in a fashion that is very typical in Costa Rica. We have ensured safeguards within the home to assist in case of an emergency. Tropical Costa Rica is reknown for high heat and the abundance of unique flora and fauna which also includes ants. As such, we always recommend to our guest to keep garbage and food sealed as to not attract ants into the home. For guests who have low tolerance for heat, we do recommend having all the windows open and fans blowing to ventilate the home. Ceilings fans are located in each room. Thank you for your feedback. It helps us in ensuring a wonderful experience for all our guests. Pura Vida!

“Immerse yourself in Costa Rica”
Reviewed 2 May 2014 for a stay in April 2014

The El Pelicano allows you to immerse youself in a true Costa Rica experience. Away from hotels and among the ticos on a beautiful beach is where you will find yourself when you stay here. It is peaceful and quiet, yet close enough to great restaurants and activities in Quepos and Manual Antonio. A lovely home to share with family and friends.

We are so pleased you chose our beach home for your long-term stay in Costa Rica. We are so glad you enjoyed the simplicity and peace that our home offers - amongst the coconuts trees and hum of the ocean at your feet. We too enjoy the “Gilligan’s Island” feel of our beach property location. Pure Costa Rica!
